I've been looking at some videos tonight. I found this video, and would like to know if what you see at 30-37sec is what is considered free take off? He is definitely off the ground before the pole begins to be engaged.

Re: Free Take off
While there is much similarity in the take off, I notice that when compared to this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYaBPDTrVuI Bubka keeps his left leg nearly strait for the entire swing, and the thrusting of the hips up to his top hand happens significantly earlier with seems to transfer far more energy to the pole. Is this accurate?

Yes, it is accurate. Markov's swing is flawed.

C'mon... Flawed... you are talking about the two jumpers who have the highest clearances in the history of the world... there are a handful of other differences between these jumpers, not to mention a lifetime of training that lead to both theses jumps, but to say that one is flawed is just kinda....

I know what you mean. But he could have jumped even higher without the tuck. Just like Britts could have jumped 6.40 if he didn't take off 2' under.

Yes, you should buy yourself the book AND the DVD. It goes over all the questions you are asking.
