Kirk - I've always trained my guys to land on their backs or butts. Before this I havn't had an athlete sprain an ankle for about 4 years. Sure enough the second I post on this thread, boom down goes my boy :crying:

What makes it better is the fact the trainers couldn't be found for 30 minutes

....today at practice I didnt jump well enough came right down REALLY close to the box. Hit my foot on the box. Hurts kinda. But im sure the hurting will be gone by tomorrow wasnt too bad. BTW this was while transitioning to a 14' pole. Even though I did this on my last vault coach says i will use it. I just gotta learn to jump and jump thinking about pushing the pole towards the sky instead of jamming it into the box..

ALWAYS keep your grip low enough that you'll land well into the pit. Maybe you just had a bad or late plant, but if you're CONSISTENTLY falling short, then you need to lower your grip or use a softer pole.

SAFETY FIRST!

I trust that your coach's advice is good ... he was there and we weren't ... but keep an eye on where you're USUALLY landing ... and heed my advice. Talk to your coach about this, and discuss it seriously.

You may have just had a "close call" ... but if you ever hurt your ankle badly by landing in the box, then you'll wish that you had listened to me. Trust me ... been there, done that!

Sitting on the sidelines watching everyone else vault while you're nursing a sore ankle is no fun.
