ALWAYS keep your grip low enough that you'll land well into the pit. Maybe you just had a bad or late plant, but if you're CONSISTENTLY falling short, then you need to lower your grip or use a softer pole.
SAFETY FIRST!
I trust that your coach's advice is good ... he was there and we weren't ... but keep an eye on where you're USUALLY landing ... and heed my advice. Talk to your coach about this, and discuss it seriously.
You may have just had a "close call" ... but if you ever hurt your ankle badly by landing in the box, then you'll wish that you had listened to me. Trust me ... been there, done that!
Sitting on the sidelines watching everyone else vault while you're nursing a sore ankle is no fun.
