Sail Piece?

We have people with well over twenty years of experience making poles - and this softening is not an urban legend - now the original thread - may just be that pole worked better for that vaulter

I never said it was not happening, I am in search of why it would happen and why a company would allow such a thing?

We know how it happened with the wonder poles and the white trainers, but we solved it before it went into the field.

High Density epoxy products must lose something; glass or resin to become softened!
I was only asking if you had a theory as to how it was happening with the spirits and not other poles?

Again I have not seen that much of a softer pole in the measures we have done.
How much softening have you found?

Is it enough to be concerned with?

Most people in the industry that are making poles I would know, such as Paul Richards and Steve Chapel.
You must be talking about Dan West is he making and designing your poles he has some very sound ideas!

The info we have on production type poles is one wgt class(5 lbs) - why - pole construction, resin content, if dry weave is used - where it is used - all can contribute - we design to stay away from the potential areas where this might happen - some of our people have been in the business almost as long as you - Bob came with from Pacer (coming up on 25yrs) , Ralph has been here for over 20, Kenny for about ten, plus the vault and coaching side, I started coaching in 1979 - Engineering pays the bills - track used to be just a passion and hobby now a full time job - still compete - Brain and David are both extremely knowledgeable about the vault - Brian coaches vaulters at U of Illinois and still is around a 17' vaulter - David was three time All-American at Baylor and vaulted on what was then the Nike Tour -

Back to original thread - sail piece - we do have a set sail piece design for each weight, length and brand of pole - i.e. Skypole is not same as Pacer FX

What the sail piece does is simply add more glass or material to that area of the pole - where the glass is added will also effect the shape of the bend - if you have a uniform structure - Constant E and I - (close to what a training pole is) you get a certain shape when loaded - beam theory would give you a very good plot for the small deflections - but by adding more material in certain areas you can make the pole bend more in the lower portion, or the upper portion, or a smooth more contious bend and a more uniform loading (stress) - Sooooo - depends what you are looking for as to what the sail piece whould be shaped for - now the kicker is how you vault/plant/takeoff effects the bend - if you lever (apply a moment) in addition to the normal energy you put into the pole - big bend and maybe
