problems with pole bends

Unread postby leftist vaulter » Wed Nov 21, 2007 11:16 pm

Last track season I vaulted on a 145 pole that was fairly flexible. This season I am 18 lbs heavier, and I am forced to use a 165 pole. This thing is comparable to a steel beam used in skyscrapers. I can straight pole it holding at 14'. When I try to bend it, my hands slip and it leaves me with blisters, and a bloody pole. I can run a 400m in 52 seconds, and I can bench only 145 lbs. Would anybody have any advice for me? is it just that I have to tweak my technique, increase my strength, or do I have to wear down the strength of my pole?

You need a shorter 165lb pole  If that is a 14'165, try a 13'165.

Also, you might have just started to develop a plant with that pole that doesn't 'slide' correctly in the box. The pole tip should hit the box a little bit more than half way in, then should hit the back after you've jumped. I had some trouble with sliding last year, and I know now that it was my plant along with really pathetic grip tape. But if you don't think it's your plant, then do try a shorter pole.

hmmm... you know, that may just be the problem. I see the common sense in getting a shorter pole, but what you said just summed up my problems. I'll try what you said as soon as possible.

Its' a few days later, and I now have no problem with the 14' 165 pole. I'm starting to get a little bend out of it. Thanks for the advice!
