I was practicing some poll runs using a 12'7" pole, but the chart says the take of should be a 9'8"? For some reason, when I place my foot on this mark, and place the pole in the box, I seem to be very under? I don't know if maybe I just measured it incorrectly or something (my friend and I double checked it), but I was definitely under. Any thoughts?

thanks!

When you say using a 12'7 "pole" are you meaning a 12'7 "grip" measured from the top of your top hand to the bottom of the pole tip? That's how it is intended to work.

DJ essentially made the chart using the Pythagorean theorum, assuming a constant reach height, which I've figured is about for an athlete between 6'0-6'2. A taller athlete can takeoff "on" closer to the box because of a higher reach/angle to the ground than a shorter athlete. Therefore, the takeoff points will not match up exactly for most athletes that are shorter or taller.

The way to use this is to take that 12'7 grip, check your step with a perfect straight/plum line from the top hand to tip of takeoff toe, note where you are from the back of the box (example: 10'2"), and then add that difference to the 6 step/mid mark. So if you're at 10'2 (6" farther than DJ's takeoff point), move his mid of 42'0 back 6" to 42'6".

When you do pole runs and even takeoffs, take a white towel and lay it across the track/runway about 6" in front of your optimum takeoff point, and it will give you a visual to "get your feet down" behind it. You don't stare at the towel, your peripheral vision picks it up. If you step on it, your spikes will puncture through it and still hook up on the track. Just don't use a 2" x 6" board like Souleman!

This really does work, and brings you into the takeoff with a high center of gravity.

hello

question... if i could give everyone everyone a very, very close starting point for their whole run.. based on the number of steps/strides they use and the physics of acceleration.. would you be interested????

As expected, the step length increased gradually during the early part of the acceleration phase. The patterns of increase were similar in both groups. However, the better group had a longer step length during this acceleration phase.

this is the physics.. i will just need some basic data from each one of you...

later

so regardless your height that chart should apply to any vaulter? for instance I hold at about 12' and my 6 step is at 67' so that's wrong/a bad run?

Hey

A 67 start point on a 12 step 6 left run doesnt mean your run is wrong what you need to do is see where your 3 left (6 steps) from takeoff is???

It should be pretty close to 40 feet.. based on the grip to MID.

But.. everyone needs to remember this chart is not a true middle step chart.. it is actually a 6 steps from take off coaches check mark..

I coach my vaulters to

Come out of the back. Get your feet down (from 6 steps in) HIT a big plant!

Come out of the back. Get your feet down...... HIT a big plant!

Come out of the back. Get your feet down,,,,,, HIT a big plant!

They should have dreams about that thought process

They learn what I mean when I say. Come out of the back.

They know what I mean when I say Get your feet down

They really know what I mean when I sayHIT a big plant!

honestly if the "MID" is correct they will have little problem .. doing the three "thought" process "run and takeoff".... they will feel like the "box is calling them" as bubba used to say............

im having trouble understanding it....

so im quite shorter than the 8' hand hold (about 7') so im guessing my take offs should be farther back... but should my strides be diffrent?

how would this change my penult and take off stride or mid mark in general?

hey

set up your run on the track with a 44 mid a 45 and a 46..

run from a 6 or 7 "left" approach..

start properly.. hit the 44 "MID"... get your feet down.. plant and takeoff.

do that as a warmup and as a sprint workout..

move that run to the runway and see how it works...

don't worry about the diffence at the takeoff from the chart..
you takeoff "out" close to a vertical line from your top hand to the takeoff toe on the runway..

hope this helps

dj

ps.. if and as that starts to work.. try the other "mid's" 45 and 46..

today was the first time i ever used the mid mark chart.

i blew through all of my big poles and ended up going up two more poles than usual!
