I would like to invite some discussion on Tye Harvey's push plant technique. I know Tye and have picked his brain on the rationale behind the push plant and have have watched him do it with success. There are three elements that I find particularily attractive. First is the additional runway speed. Not having to carry the pole produces a more effortless run. This is especially true for a few of my promising HS girls who have yet to develop adequate upper body strength. The torque from the pole drop usually produces a deceleration into the plant for them. I timed them using both methods on the track planting into a calked in box and found that the push plant was consistantly faster. Secondly the plant mechanics seem simplified however it is importnt to get the hands high and not be too far under because the rippage effect is a little more pronounced if these two things are not accomplished. On the upside it is easier to get the hands high and I noticed more consistant out plants. The plant is nothing more that pressing the top hand hand to its highest position and grabbing the pole with the bottom hand one left (right) out. Lastly, although I haven't gotten this far yet with any of my athletes I seems that it will be easier to progress to bigger poles with more grip because of the speed factor. Last Sunday I saw Tye jump 18'2" followed by some good rips at 18'8" from a 7 left using his technique.
I know this isn't for everybody but might make for some good conversation.
