congrats to all....its too bad woepse's only miss was at 14'9 and the runway was loose in front of the box and caused the pole to stick in front and he didnt go up but broke the plane...it did the same thing on his second attempt at 15'4 and they gave him another jump because of it.
This was our first j.o. national meet in some time attending and a couple of things bugged me...the standards did not have the full range allowed...athletes were told if they wanted the standards at 40 cm that these standards would not go that far forward and the pegs looked awful small to be sized correctly...also a competitor flew from conneticut and was told he would have poles here for him...when he got there the guy that told him he was sorry he didnt get home the previous night and didnt bring the poles for him that day...he ended up using some of our poles but were smaller than he needed....just a couple of blips on the radar though of an otherwise great time

I officiated at our Association and Regional meet, and I can say that Junior Olympics are very confusing for officials. Most officials already know all the rules for USATF, NFHS, and NCAA. Well JOs are part of USATF so you would assume it is all the same rules... no JOs have a whole separate set of rules. At Regionals, our head officials did not even know about the qualifying standards until it was too late. We should have had 7 girls from our region qualify to Nationals, instead places 4-7 ended up 5cm short of the standard because I didn't know what it was and when I asked the officials before the meet, they insisted it did not exist.

At the National meet these things should be addressed, and the fact that JO rules are slightly different than college rules, and that the equipment might need to be adjusted should have been planned for in advance by the LOC.

My personal opinion is that no one should vault with the standards closer than 45, but apparently 40 is allowed under JO rules *shrug*

Wow, Mt.Sac has one of the best facilities to jump at! Those standards are awesome by the way, I have never heard anyone complain about them, or their pegs. The facility itself is beautiful, and its always a tail wind. I did not know so many things were wrong with the place though A lot of national records and world leading jumps have taken place there! Everyone I talk to has had nothing but good things to say about the place, from professional to novice....

Well they are college length pegs, so I can see why youth athletes might not like them as much

those might be the right pegs for the event based on the rules but I dont know the measurement of them, they just looked very short


as far as the standards not going up that far it did not affect us at all...jeremy was on the biggest pole we had in the bag...15 lbs heavier than he jumps on normally with the standards at 80 and still hit it on the way up...conditions were great...hot day with a slight, ever so slight tail
and the rumway didnt affect him but those who plant early onto the runway were hitting the flaw in the runway.

I know this topic has be "beat up on" before, but here is another example of why all pole vault rules should be the same. Long pegs, short pegs, 90 seconds, one min., glove, no glove, runway markers, what a PITA. This, to me, would be like HS baseball getting 4 strikes and in college you get 3, but in Little League you get 3 your first time up and 4 every time after that!!!!!! Sorry to rant, but it is a real pain to have several sets of rules. Maybe some day! Ya think?
