Hi, I'm trying to adjust my run to using dj's midmark chart. In the video, my midmark is set at 43 feet, with my handgrip at 12' 7". I'm running from 6 lefts. It's a little difficult to see the midmark and the plantbox (both drawn on the ground with chalk), but I slowmo the video when my leg hits the midmark during the replay. I end up being slightly under, with the pole tip a little past the plant box when I'm fully extended at the plant.
Anyway, any comments about my stride length, cadence, approach, plant, etc would be greatly appreciated!

Pole run with mid mark
Your approach looks really good and I applaud your trying to apply the mid chart to your run; however, you are capable of gripping much higher therefore your mid will be considerably farther out than the chart. The chart is pretty accurate at the point of an athlete's maximum ability, but it will put your mid too close when you are gripping below what your are capable of.
For you a mid of 44' gripping 12'7 is not too far out. Keep working on the same elements but try to jump "up" more and "out" less at the takeoff without slowing down.

I just realized that on the midmark chart, a grip at 12'7" requires a midmark of 42 feet! So I was 1 foot out further than I should've been. But Barto, you're saying that I should be further out if I'm going to grip at 12' 7"? The pole I was using in the video, well it's not really a pole vaulting pole. It's just a pole with a tennis ball at then end as a buttplug, but at the moment, it's the only pole I can use.
However, generally at meets, I grip at around 13'. Would that grip be at my maximum capability? How can I tell?

Looks to me that your last right and takeoff left are the same length as your run. If you look at the chart you will notice that the penult-R is a little longer and T/O left is supposed to be shorter (6" shorter) than the strides at the mid mark. Also keep in mind that the mid mark chart is based on a vaulter who is roughly around 6 feet tall. So, that being said if you're shorter (I'm 5'6" and my take off and mid mark should be roughly 6" farther out than the chart) you have to take that into account. I'll tell you this? If you can get things close during the run up using AND TRUSTING the chart, you'll never again worry about whether your steps are ON. Keep working with it and use it to adjust it to you and you to it. You'll be so glad you did. Later..........Mike

Hey thanks for pointing that out. I'm definitly going to have to work on improving my penultimate step and my take off step. However, Coach Job (ladysvolpvcoach) informed me that your last 3 lefts are going to be the same no matter how tall or short you are. He said he took 2 videos of a shorter and a taller vaulter using the same grip and midmark, and he said after they both hit the midmark, their strides just blended into one identical motion.

I'm just passing on what dj has said in other threads. Coach Job sent me the dartfish that you are speaking of and it is quite remarkable. Currently I use the 6" out thing for myself but I'm not anywhere near the vaulter that the girls from UT are. Like I said though, keep working with the chart and getting used to making it work for you. Good luck...........Mike
