Chip Heuser & Michael Seaman practice

Chip Heuser is a vaulter for the University of Oklahoma. He is vaulting on a 5 meter 15.0 UCS stick, from 5 lefts, at a bungie hanging at 17'3". Michael Seaman is a vaulter who will be jumping for the University of Tennessee. He is running from four lefts on a 14' 165lbs UCS stick.

In the video it is quite obvious to tell who is who, but in case you are slow...Chip is wearing the spandex shorts, and I have on the headband.

This is a pretty sweet video of Chip, he has some serious height over 17'3".

I (Michael Seaman) am trying to figure out how to use my arms during the vault, and am having problems with the swing any the final drop of the shoulders...so any comments on just about anything would be great. Also it is the first time I have ever attempted to work on my running form...and it felt a lot better, but any comments on that would be great also.

Enjoy the Kentucky scenery!

I don’t know if I really want to give advice. Chip might break my school record. Just kidding. It’s been around too long anyway.

Chip’s jump looks really good as far as position goes. It is very hard to tell what is going on with his effort. You can go through good positions, but be passive as you do it. He is swinging really well. The trail leg has a lot of velocity. But his chest is falling down through the bar at the top, which means he is losing energy somewhere. If I were guessing (and I am) I would say that he is letting up with his arms just as he finishes the swing instead of keeping pressure on the pole. At the finish of the swing the pressure in the hands transitions from going down toward the hips to going up toward the chest. When this happens it is easy to let the pressure off and this causes your hips to stall. Chip needs to try laying the shoulders back and getting close to the pole as early and with as much power as possible.

Seamen needs a lot narrower grip. No more than 22 inches. Till that happens it is hard to give any advice.

Hope this helps.

It looks like you could make your plant a little smoother, you know, more fluid. Yours is a little choppy, but definitely good vaulting.
