If DURABILITY is the issue, give Paul Richards a call. While I absolutely detest its performance characteristics, Altius Poles are practically bulletproof. After working at Don Hood's camps for the past 4 years, I've seen those things dropped, run over, spiked, slammed against standards, wedged through doorways, fall off of vehicles, and basically every virtual form of abuse performed upon those Altius poles. Not to mention they're jumped on about a million times a year. Do they break? Yes, all poles can and usually do break eventually. I haven't seen near as many break as the other brands though. Reason: thicker walled poles, built like training poles. I've even heard they have no sailpiece. Heavy to carry, slow to unbend, but DURABLE!
If PERFORMANCE is the issue, well, you'll never find a definitive answer to that question by reading these message boards. Is the glass 1/2 empty or 1/2 full? If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? The war of opinions rages on.
And by the way, I do have a favorite brand - thanks Bryan!

lol, the duct taping your pole thing, kinda funny cause i've done it....my coach and old 5m pole that he used specifically for pool vaulting, hadnt used it in years, but one of us brought it up cause he wanted to try pool vaulting cause we heard about it....point is, pole was all sharded with fiberglass that got everywhere when we rocked back....the second (and for now last) time before we did it, we duct taped the WHOLE POLE......no more fiberglass splinters....
Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them-a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill. - Muhammad Ali

I have seen Altius poles break, but we have a lot more of them up here in the northwest than anywhere else probably.
Probably the pole I have seen break the most, in relation to number of times I have seen people jump on them, is Nordic. Every year I go to the Salem (and Portland!) street vaults I have seen one or two break
But not that any of that really matters... but I would say that Altius poles are great for high school programs. They are the cheapest out there by FAR, and they are very durable.
As for duct tape... masters vaulter Dennis Phillips (Matt Phillips dad) uses reverse wrapped duct tape for his grip

Yeah, I've seen a few break myself, mostly clean horizontal breaks in the middle, but one vertical break in 3 places along the axis of the pole, creating some seriously sharp fragments that would've filleted the vaulter if he had gotten hit by one.
I've heard that the Northwest has a lot of Altius's (or is is Altii ) but I'd have to say that since they're manufactured in Texas, that we probably have the bulk of them. Every school I've ever seen at a meet owns at least a few, if not their whole series. Many of the better vaulters down here even use them - problem is, in the bigger sizes they get seriously heavy - compare a 15' 180 Altius to a 15' 180 Carbon and the Altius feels like a Bamboo tree!

Yeah well you win... Texas is a much bigger state than WA
But I would say the latter statement is pretty true up here as well.
