Wa-Hi's boys and girls remain undefeated in Columbia Basin League track and field meets by dominating Ike and Pasco at Martin Field Thursday.


Wa-Hi's boys and girls remained undefeated in the Columbia Basin League track and field ranks Thursday afternoon by dominating visiting Eisenhower and Pasco at Martin Field.

The Blue Devil girls ran away from the Cadets, 107-43, and pounded the Bulldogs, 98-52, while the boys posted a 100-45 victory over Eisenhower and pummeled Pasco, 126-19.

Both teams are now 4-0 in the CBL heading into their final regular-season meet next Thursday in Yakima against Richland and Wenatchee that will likely determine both the boys and girls league titles, according to Wa-Hi girls coach Eric Hisaw and boys mentor Harvey Wellington.

Shanie Bushman and Andrew Battenberg led Wa-Hi with three individual victories apiece.

Bushman prevailed in the pole vault (nine feet, six inches), long jump (15-09.50) and triple jump (34-03).

``Jumping events (are) very demanding,'' Hisaw said. ``She is as mentally tough as any competitor I've had in nine years.''

Battenberg won the 100 (11.21), 200 (22.88) and 400 (50.40).

``That was one of the best performances that I've ever seen from a sprinter in 40 years of coaching track

and field,'' Wellington said.

Other Blue Devil girls standouts included Andi Bughi and Ashlee Wall, who won two events each. Bughi won the 100 hurdles (16.54) and 300 hurdles (49.0). Wall was victorious in the 1600 (5:14.44) and 3200 (11:19.36).

``It wasn't her best meet of the year, but she competed very well,'' Hisaw said of Bughi. ``(Wall) is the class of the league right now and continues to impress me. She is very talented.''

Blue Devil Michele Retzlaff won the 400 (1:01.85) and placed second in the 100 (12.91) and 200 (26.93).

``She is another incredible competitor,'' Hisaw said.

Other Wa-Hi runners-up included Helen Reich in the 1600 (5:16.40), Melissa Eastman in the high jump (4-10), and Adrianna Rodriguez in the javelin (107-02).

Blue Devils placing third were McKhayla Morris in the 100 (17.84), 300 hurdles (51.0), and long jump (14-08), Kaitlin Porter in the triple jump (32-00.50), and Reich in the 3200 (11.56.97).

Retzlaff and Bughi teamed up with Katie Noble and Allison Erwin to win the 4x200 relay (1:50.0). Noble, Erwin, Jenna Hussey and Alyssa Smith were third in the 4x100 relay (52.54).

``I'm proud of the way the kids came out,'' Hisaw said. ``It's exciting for them.''

Blue Devils finishing 1-2-3 in the 110 high hurdles, triple jump and javelin also highlighted Wa-Hi's day on the boys side along with Battenberg's trifecta.

Michael Najera won the 110 hurdles (16.26) and was followed by teammates Kyle Eaton (16.42) and Ian Smyth (17.90).

Justin Piek emerged triumphant in the triple jump (40-01). Brock Anderson was second (39-11.50) and Steven Patton took third (38-05.50).

Aaron Mettler claimed the javelin (180-02). Josh Clothier was second (163-03) and Kyle Jones placed third (157-00).

Eaton and Najera tied for first in the 300 hurdles (42.68). Zac Cooper won the high jump (5-09) and Clothier took the shot put (46-07.75).

Adam Neace (14-00) and Randy Olson (13-09) were 1-2 in the pole vault for Wa-Hi.

``That was the finest dual meet in pole vault competition I've seen since 1979,'' Wellington said. ``It was a strong performance.''

Jassim Colis, Michael Higgins and Jorge Garcia were second for the Blue Devils in the 800 (2:05.48), 3200 (10:10.47) and long jump (19-10), respectively.

Anderson, Jordan Ness, Victor Cantero and Tim McEuen contributed third-place performances for Wa-Hi. Anderson's placing came in the long jump (19-05.75), Ness was third in the 400 (52.38), Cantero achieved a similar finish in the 1600 (4:47.55) and McEuen was third in the high jump (5-06).

In the relays, Piek, Ness, Battenberg and Spencer Hessler banded together to win the 4x100 (44.20). Ness, Najera, Colis and Jones were second in the 4x400 (3:39.45).

``It was phenomenal performance out of our team,'' Wellington said. ``They stepped up and had a great meet against Eisenhower.

``We're just beginning to understand how good we can be.''

Track and Field

The Eastmont boys and girls track teams won all five relays that were contested Thursday in a quadruple dual with Columbia Basin League 3A foes Kamiakin, Southride and West Valley at home.

The boys 400, 1600 and girls 400, 800 and 1600 meter relay teams all took first place in the event, as the Wildcats gear up for the stretch run.

Jenna Haven is working her way back into championship form week by week, anchoring the 400 and 1600 relays and finishing third in the 400-meter dash.

"This has been a pretty heavy week for her training-wise," Eastmont head coach Gary Millard said of Haven. "She didn't come out improving as much as she would like but she's getting back. She got caught by a couple of girls in the open 400 but in two or three weeks that won't happen."

Morgan Clem ran a blistering 45.37 in the 300-meter hurdles, her fastest electronic time in her signature event this season. She missed last week's meet after traveling to Carnegie Hall in New York City school's choir.

On the boys side, Dan Simmons led the way for the Wildcats, turning in the best complete meet of his track career, Millard said. Simmons won the 100, 200 and anchored both relays.

Grizzlies shine on home track

Sunnyside's Jordyne Jaquish soars to a new school record in the high jump during yesterday's home meet.

The home track was kind to the Sunnyside boys and girls track teams yesterday in dual meets against Kennewick and Hanford.
On the girls side, Sunnyside's Jordyne Jaquish smashed the school high jump record with a mark of 5-3 for first-place honors. Just last week she had tied the school mark of 5-2.
"She set that mark against some very good competition," observed Coach Robin Bryson.
Jaquish also set a personal best time of 51.58 in the 300 hurdles to finish in first place.
In addition, the junior anchored the Lady Grizzly 1,600 relay team that earned a second-place ribbon with a personal best time of 4:33.32. Other members of the relay squad are Teresa Ramos, Brittany Messmore and Audra Hays. The relay was won by Hanford in a time of 4:27.37.
Messmore continued to show improvement in the 1,600, grabbing first-place honors with a personal best time of 5:37.99. Messmore also took the top spot in the 3,200 by running a time of 12:38.14.
In other running events, Ramos and Hays were second and third in the 400, both recording season best times of 64.78 and 65.39, respectively. Ramos also set her season's best time in the 800 to take first in 2:36.97.
As they have all season, the throwing events were also a strength for the Lady Grizzlies.
Sunnyside's Maria Ramirez, Claire Schilperoort and Molly Dolan were second, third and fourth, respectively in the discus with throws of 92-11, 86-9 and 84-11.
It was a 1-2-3 sweep in the shot-put for the Lady Grizzlies. Carly Dahlstrom took first-place honors with a personal best mark of 33-03. She was followed by teammates Schilperoort and Sarah Kilian, who fielded second and third-place marks of 31-6 and 31-2.
Schilperoort bested the field in the javelin with a first-place throw of 110-11. Teammate Brenda Barrios was fourth in the same event with a mark of 96 feet.
As a team, the Lady Grizzlies tallied 65 points to Kennewick's 83. In addition, the Sunnyside girls lost to Hanford 87-61.
The Sunnyside boys split their dual meets, defeating Kennewick 82-51 and losing to Hanford 96-48.
Speaking of boys competition, Sunnyside's Roy Haringa won the 110 and 300 hurdles with times of 16.79 and 43.47, respectively. Haringa's time in the 300 was a personal best.
Haringa also anchored the 1,600 relay team that finished in first place with a season's best time of 3:40.38. Also participating on the relay team were Kennedy Sarmiento, Sterling Scott and Gracen Gonzalez.
Scott and Gonzalez went one-two in the 1,600 meters with respective times of 4:39.19 and 4:48.03. Both times were personal bests.
Victor Rios tied for third in the 100 meters with a personal best time of 12:03. Rios also finished third in the 200 with a personal best time of 24.38.
The parade of personal bests continued with Gilberto Villalobos, who claimed second-place honors in the 800 with a time of 2:13.6.
Jacob Rogers was fourth for Sunnyside in the 3,200 meters with a time of 10:44.14.
Also for the Grizzlies, Jaime Sambrano and Tony Mendez finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the long jump with jumps of 18-5.25 and 18-3.25.
Sunnyside's Brice Rinehold was a double winner in the throwing events. He was first in the discus with a throw of 122-5 and in the javelin with a mark of 142-9. Rinehold also claimed second-place honors in the shot-put with a toss of 40-11. "Brice had a solid day," Bryson noted.
The coach also praised the high school staff, parents and volunteers for helping to pull off a successful home meet on the Sunnyside track.
Bryson also looked ahead, especially with all the personal and season marks-not to mention a school record-set yesterday.
"We're at that point in the season where we're trying to work on improving those marks," she said. "We're trying to get as many kids as possible into Districts."

Raschko first in 1,500-meter run

MORO, ORE. - After a year-long break from running the 1,500-meter event, Bickleton's Danielle Raschko was back on track at the Sherman County Invite this past Saturday, claiming first place honors and clocking in at 5:33.4.
"Danielle led wire to wire to win the 1,500 in a PR time of 5:33," said Coach Darrell Lang. "She led a girl from Wasco County by five to 10 yards most of the way and steadily pulled away to a 20-yard victory."
Raschko earned third place honors in the 3,000-meter run as well, clocking in at 12:38, also a personal record.
The Bickleton girls finished 10th out of 19 teams with 22 points, while the boys finished 13th with 20 points.
Teammate Eric Hess earned third place honors in the discus, throwing 128-8. Hess also earned fourth place honors in the shotput, throwing 45-9.5.
Bickleton's Edgar Molena set a personal record in the discus, surpassing his previous mark by six feet while throwing 119-7.5.
"If he keeps improving, he'll soon catch up to Eric (Hess)," said Lang.
Bickleton runners Nakai Kibby, Johanna Jensen, Chelsey Mercer and Raschko earned fifth place honors in the girls 4x400 relay, clocking in at 5:11.
The boys relay team, comprised of Molina, James Rasmussen, Junior Hernandez and Patrick Maeder, ran the 4x400 in 4:18, but didn't place.
Mercer set a personal record in the 200-meter run, clocking in at 31.7.
Jensen earned seventh place honors in the 100 meters, clocking in at 14.4.
Hernandez earned seventh and fifth place finishes in the 1,500 meters and 3,000 meters, respectively. Hernandez clocked in at 10:39.9 in the 3,000 meters and set a personal record at 4:43 in the 1,500 meters.
Maeder earned sixth place honors in the pole vault, catapulting 10-6.

Moser leads Tigers to top marks at Tonasket Invite

Tonasket tracksters recorded several personal bests at the Tigers’ invitational meet April 20.
Whitney Moser won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.93 seconds, an all-time best for her, reported coach Bob Thornton.
Elizabeth Seccomb finished fourth in the discus at 85 feet, seven inches.
Hector Aguila stayed busy, finishing first in the 200 in 23.93 seconds, second in the 100 in 11.7 and second in the 300-meter hurdles in 42.04.
Freshman Jacob Longmire improved 23 seconds to finish second in the 3,200 in 11 minutes, 13 seconds.
He also went 5-6 in the high jump for fourth.
Hayden Terrill took third in the pole vault at 10 feet.
Liberty Bell won the boys’ team title with 80 points.

CHS track teams breeze past Bantams, Indians

The Cheney Blackhawks had a busy week in track and field events, conquering Great Northern League foes Clarkston and Colville at home last Thursday.

Both the boys and girls also had some fine showings at the Mooberry Relays at Gonzaga Prep last Saturday as well.
The boys posted wins of 126-17 against Clarkston and 101-40 over Colville and led most events. The Blackhawk girls had a similarly good afternoon at home, taking out the Bantams 119-26 and the Indians 100-44.

Jesus Fregoso, not surprisingly, led the way in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 10.8 seconds, nearly a full second ahead of the closest runner from Colville. Brian Benzel also had a good run for Cheney, finishing in 11.5 seconds.

Fregoso also won the 200, finishing in 22.9. Alex Steele finished in second at 23.4.

In the 400, Cheney settled for a second-place finish, with Steele finishing at 54.7. DeAngelo Jones came in third at 55.8.

In the 800 meters, it was Isaac Kuula on top with a time of 2 minutes, 7 seconds. He was chased by Tyler Schmidt, second in 2:09, and Jarrod Schaber, third in 2:13.3.

In the 1,600, Arick Zachman paced the pack with a first-place finish of 4:49.6. Reese Martin came in second for the Hawks at 4:51.7.

In the 3,200, Daniel Issa finished second behind Colville at 10:36.6.

In the 110 high hurdles, Cheney swept the top three spots with Sean Kaemming coming in first (18.80), Jordon Plummer a hair behind (18.85) and Cash Anderson third (19.5). In the 300 low hurdles, it was Anderson taking second in 46.4 and Plummer in third at 47.1.

In the relay events, Cheney took first in the 400 at 45.4 and the 1,600 (3:42.1).

In the field events, Brandon Hardie finished in third with a 5-foot, 10-inch clearing in the high jump. Benzel went 19-2 in the long jump for second place, followed by Larson who finished third at 18-9 1/4. Larson came in second in the triple jump at 39-3 1/2, and Nathaniel Youmans finished third at 38-7 1/2.

In the pole vault, Scott Grambo came in second behind Colville, clearing 9 feet. In discus, Cheney secured the top two spots with Griffon Jones tossing 151-11 and Jeff Rogers going 132-2.

While Colville won the top spot in javelin, Cheney finished in second with Keith Parker’s 148-7 mark, and in third with Jordan Hansen’s throw of 144-2.

The shot put belonged to Cheney, which took all three high marks. Jones hurled 49-6 1/2, followed by Jon Quisenberry’s 45-3 toss and Jeff Rogers’ 39-7 1/2 contribution.

The girls also had fine results. Freshman Shelby Mauer sped to a 12.6 finish in the 100. Rainee Palmer and Amanda Swenson took the second and third spots, respectively, in the 200 with times of 27.4 and 28.1.

In the 400, it was all Cheney in the top three spots: Crystal Simmons in first (1:01.0), Taysia Weatherbee in second (1:04.6) and Jessica Ziemann in third (107.8). Ditto the 800, with Kyle Miller finishing first at 2:28.7, Rachel Rule coming in second at 2:31.0 and Hayley Seipp third at 2:32.5.

In the 1,600, Cheney finished in second with Maddie Brown’s time of 5.44.7 and April Batchelor’s 5:57.8 for third.

MacKenzie Lauber won the 100 high hurdles at 16.62. Sydney Walter finished in third at 17.2. Clarkson dominated the 300 low hurdles, but freshman Chelsie Breen had a fine showing in second place at 50.7.

In the relay events, Cheney finished second in both the 400 (51.83) and 800 (1:51.6). Colville won both events.
Moving to the field, Grace Dehner finished in second in the high jump at 4-10. The long jump was dominated by Lauber’s leap of 16-5, and Walter leapt to 14-6 1/2 for third. Gen McCormick won the triple jump at 32-2 1/4, with Kate Terpstra coming in third at 27-7 3/4.

In the pole vault, Cheney came in first and second with Shinnae Vedder’s 10-foot clearing, followed by Lucy Alton’s 7-0. Crystal Igbinoba had a nearly 8-foot distance between her and her nearest competitor with a 110-0 mark in the discus.

In the javelin, it was all Cheney in the top three spots, with Ceri Palk finishing first (104-2), MacKensie Gaddy second (97-11) and Bryanna Pavlish third (97-4).
