TRACK


Kent sparks Toutle girls

TOUTLE ---- Kandra Kent won three events for the Toutle Lake girls, and Jeran DeLapp and Taylor Schnebly had big days for the Toutle boys in a five-team track meet here Thursday.

White Pass tallied 84 points to win the boys' portion of the meet. The Ducks were third with 73 points.

Napavine won the girls' meet with 97 points, ahead of Toutle in fourth (56).

Kent won the 100 in 13.0, the 400 in 1:06.0 and the triple jump in 31-4.

In the boys' meet, DeLapp won the 100 (11.0) and the 200 (23.4), and teamed with Schnebly, Shane Croft and James Davidson to win the 400 relay in 45.9. Schnebly won the long jump with a pesonal-best 20-0 1/2, and also won the triple jump in 39-6.


Fish trio sparks victory

ILWACO ---- Matt Kaino, Eddy Knick and Stephen Berglund propelled the Ilwaco boys to victory here Thursday in a four-team track meet.

Ilwaco totaled 127 points to win the boys' meet. The Ilwaco girls finished second (85) to Forks (96).

Kaino won the 200 (23.94) and 400 (53.10), and Berglund won the 1600 (4:58.0) and 3200 (11.08). They teamed with Luke Jensen and Justin Lewis to win the 1600 relay (3:55.8).

Knick won the high jump at 5-4 and the 100 at 11.52.

Bonnie Perez won the 200 (29.01) and the javelin (108-6) to pace the Ilwaco girls. She also teamed with Cameo Ulbricht, Annika Wolters and Melany Bliss to win the 1600 relay (4:43.2). Ulbricht won the 100 (13.93), and Kelly Freese won the 1600 (6:09.4).


Rocket boys rule track

TENINO ---- The Castle Rock boys track team scored 57 points on Thursday in a three-way meet to top Tenino (41) and Rochester (36). In the girls' meet, it was Rochester 67, CR 55 and Tenino 11.

Ian Hancock of the Rockets took the 100 meters in 11.85 and the 200 in 29.46. Jon Byerly was a double winner in the long jump (18-11 1/2) and triple jump (36-9). Jed Lomer took the 1600 in 6:07, and Josiah Smith's javelin throw of 132-0 was also good for first place.

CR won the boys' 1600 relay in 3:59.78 with Byerly, Lomer, Hancock and Tyler Eccles. The girls won their 400 relay in 57.39 with Marrisa Carpentier, Alyssa Hensley, Jacque Dent and Kristina Biava, and the 800 relay in 2:05.29 with Hensley, Dent, Jessica Faul and Carpentier.

Dara Rule (3200, 14:04 and 1600, 7:00), Kari Toms (100 hurdles, 18:28) and Emmy Dolan (triple jump, 28-3 1/2) were Castle Rock's winners in the girls' individual events.


Mules dominate Spuds

RIDGEFIELD ---- Wahkiakum slipped past Ridgefield 74-70 in the boys' half of a nonleague track dual here Thursday, while the girls had an easier time of it by beating the Spudders 79-33.

The boys had three double winners: Romeo Savant (shot put, 42-0, and javelin, 162-10), Toby David (100 meters, 11.41 and 200, 23.09) and Walker Riley (1600, 4:50.81 and 800, 2:13.29). Jon Murphy won the 400 in 54.94.

Wahkiakum claimed four relay wins: the boys' 400 in 46.27 with Murphy, Alec Sealund, Savant, and David; the boys' 1600 in 3:42.18 with David, Savant, Murphy and Riley; the girls' 400 in 54.41 with Whitley Wirkkala, Valle Ledtke, Whitney Chaput and Jasmine Bingham; and the girls' 800 in 1:56.44 with Brandi Arness, Bingham, Abby Burns and Ledtke.

Bingham was a force in the individual events as well, taking the 100 in 12.64 and the 200 in 26.98. Other winners for the Mules were Ledtke (400, 1:06.46) and Sarah Doumit (high jump, 4-9 1/2).


Hilanders swamp River

Kelso and Columbia River split a Greater St. Helens 3A League dual Thursday at Joe Stewart Track, with River winning the girls' meet 86-64 and the Kelso boys coming out on top 101.5-42.5.

The Hilanders' Dylan Gaudette dominated in field events, winning the long jump (20 feet, 9 1/2 inches), the triple jump (41-10) and the pole vault (12 feet). Faisal Abdulahi won the 1600 meters in 4 minutes, 26.7 seconds and the 800 in 1:59.71.

Spencer Peck (110 hurdles, 16.8), Cody Clark (shot put, 48-10 1/4), Adam Scalesse (300 hurdles, 43.56), Braden Keller (javelin, 155-7), Darry Rupe (discus, 128-2) and Aaron Cook (3200, 10:03.3) all won for the Scots, and Kelso's 400 relay of Gaudette, Jordan Wishard, Tanner Davis and Matt Montesano won in 44.81.

For the Kelso girls, junior Amber Miles achieved PRs and first-place performances in the discus (99-8) and shot put (32-2). The 1600 relay of Veronica Mendoza, Adriann Dahl, Caitlynn Jackson and Cassy Teig won in 4:26.3, and Kelso also got wins from Jill Karnofski (javelin, 109-5), Jackson (400, 65.84), Kara Kitchens (pole vault, 9-0) and Mendoza (800, 2:32.5).

"We still have Camas to get through, but this win was a big one for us," Kelso coach Joe Krieder said. "On both sides, even thought we lost the girls, everybody stepped up and performed to the best of their ability."


Pond, Kalama shine

WHITE SALMON ---- Marcus Pond set a school record in the 400-meter dash to help Kalama win the boys' portion of a six-team track meet here Thursday.

Woodland won the girls' half of the meet.

Marcus Pond won the 400 with a time of 50.86 as the Chinooks amassed 156 points, ahead of second-place Woodland (104).

The victorious Woodland girls tallied 134 points to third-place Kalama's 116.

Pond also won the 100 in 11.66, and ran legs on a pair of winning relay efforts. He teamed with Charlie Ashlock, Trevor McCain and Isreal Jessee to win the 400 relay (44.97), and Ashlock, Jessee and Ricky Hunzleman to win the 1600 relay (3:46.8). Ashlock won the 200 (23.50), McCain won the javelin (168-7) and Sean McDonald the discus (138-8).

For the Kalama girls, freshman Kaylee Brown set a personal record in winning the 1600 (6:04), and also won the 800 (2:41.0). Jan Fleming won the shot put at 30-5 1/2.

The Daily News did not receive a report from Woodland before Thursday night's deadline.


Naselle boys take 2nd

NASELLE ---- Kyle Burkhalter, Jeremy Ray and Tyler Nortrup won individual events, and Naselle also captured a pair of relays en route to a second-place finish in the boys' half of a six-team track and field meet here Thursday.

Burkhalter won the high jump at 5-8, Ray the javelin (135-2) and Nortrup the pole vault (11-0). The 400 relay of Ray, Nick Hines, Jake Peterson and Nathan Carlson (52.1) also took first, along with the 1600 relay of Conor Smith, Hines, Austin Burkhalter and Kyle Burkhalter (3:56.5).

Northwest Christian won the meet with 144 points, followed by Naselle (130), Willapa Valley (63), Wishkah (63), Pe Ell (60) and Raymond (30).

The Naselle girls took third with 103 points, trailing Northwest Christian in first (125) and runner-up Willapa Valley (124). Wishkah (78), Raymond (58) and Pe Ell (12) rounded out the team scoring.

Jenny Klinger won the 3200 (13:53.2), Nicole Laney the triple jump (28-9 1/4) and Erin Saari the high jump (4-8) for the Comets. The 1600 relay of Kelsey Fletcher, Saari, Emily Green and Sylvia Herrold posted a victory (4:46.4).
