FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Binghamton University senior Rory Quiller finished in second place in the pole vault at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, clearing a height of 18 feet, 0 1/2 inch Friday at the University of Arkansas' Randal Tyson Track Center.

Quiller's height, which earned him All-America honors for being among the top eight Friday, eclipsed his own school record of 17 feet, 8 1/2 inches set earlier this year.

"Finally, it's a monkey to get off my back," Quiller said of his All-America status. "I remember during my freshman year, one of our seniors introduced me to someone, saying 'This kid is going to be a future All-American.' That's been in the back of my mind, that it's my senior year and I haven't been All-American yet.

"Looking back on it, I'm glad the kid didn't have to lie for me."

Quiller, one of four BU Division I All-Americans, finished with the same height as the champion, McNeese State's Brad Gebauer. Because Gebauer had fewer total misses, he was awarded the top spot. Gebauer had two misses and Quiller three, Quiller said.

"I was winning after my jump," Quiller said. "I was in first, then (Gebauer) made his first attempt and bumped me down to second. You had to expect it. I was expecting it. You can't blame the competition for it."

Said BU coach Mike Thompson: "(Quiller) was probably the best jumper here today. He was a little shaky early on, but he did a great job of competing and making smart decisions. To get second in this meet is not too bad."

Quiller, from West Point, had made two previous trips to an NCAA Championship meet. As a sophomore, Quiller finish 12th at the NCAA Indoor Meet and last spring placed 13th at the NCAA Outdoor Meet.

All Quiller no filler: BU star 2nd at NCAA’s

Rory Quiller has done it all this season. He set school records, America East records and now after finishing second at the NCAA championships, the senior pole vaulter is an All-American.

Quiller set a school record for the pole vault earlier this year with a jump of 17-8 1/2. He did this in the America East championship and with it, earned himself a trip to the NCAAs.

The NCAA track and field championships took place this past weekend at the University of Arkansas. Quiller had been to the championships twice before, placing 12th and 13th in 2005’s indoor meet and last year’s outdoor meet, respectively.

As this is his senior year, Quiller had pressure to stand above the rest and truly make an impact. He was not daunted, according to his head coach, Mike Thompson.

Pole vaulter named NCAA All-American

QUILLER
Senior pole vaulter Rory Quiller, 22, of West Point placed second in the pole vault at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 9 at the University of Arkansas.

The top eight finishers in each individual event are named All-American. Quiller is Binghamton’s fourth All-American and first in track and field since the athletic department moved up to the NCAA Division I level in 2001.

His jump of 18 feet-½ inch breaks his own school record. It’s also the highest individual finish ever recorded by a Binghamton athlete at an NCAA Division I championship.

“Rory did a really good job today of handling the pressure of a big meet,â€Â
