I didnt say average top caliber either, I said that I think 15' and 15'6'' fall somewhere into the average range, because I do not think it is spectacular, nor do I think It is below average, I just think it is an average jump.

How many HS male vaulters are there? 10,000? How many 15'+ vaulters are there in a given year? 200 or so probably.

Average is probably closer to 10' than it is 15'.

My educated guess is closer to 20,000.

There are a ton of vaulters out there on the jr. high/high school level. To help vaultchick with an example.....If there's 20 girls in your competition and you place in the top 8, you're above average.

Do they teach the definition of "average" in Indiana? ;)

Say you have 1,000 17-foot vaulters. This is way generous since there's not even close to 1,000 14-foot HS vaulters in the country. Say there's another 10,000 12-foot vaulters. This is also unlikely. Let's not even consider any vaulters jumping lower than 12'...which would probably be at least 70% of all the HS vaulters. The average for this set of vaulters is just under 12'6".

Then it would be lower. If your PR is 16'8", what's your average performance during the season? 16'? 16'4"?. Definitely not 16'8".

It depends on the sample you are finding averages for. When is a vaulter considered a HS vaulter? when he/she attends his/her first meet? It would be a very interesting study to see the percent of jumpers in the nation jumping certain hieghts. It also depends on what grade you are in. My guess would be a huge number of 10-11' guys, with another big wave at the 12'-13'... then slowly digressing to about 15-15'6. There are probably 50-100 15'6 or higher jumpers in the nation, so that is a very very small percentage. Although when you only compete at big, national meets, the average might be 13-14. But go up to NY for example and see some duel meets, with average hieghts around 10-11, and a 12'6 jumper winning. kinda throws off your perspective. Anyways... i say average all around HS jumping average for a senior is 13', with a HUGE and i stress HUGE percent error (i think thats what its called, i need to brush up on statistics).
The greater the challenge, the more glorious the triumph

Alright, in reading everyone's thoughts I understand my problem. I have limited knowledge on most of the states outside of Texas, Cali, Florida and the Heartland Region. For Indiana, I would say you are an average vaulter if you can go 13' for a guy. Average being that you know what you are doing you are consistent and you look like a vaulter (completely your vault with average form). If you look at teh state meet as being above average then that would put the height at 14' (with an occasional 13'6" vaulters getting in). This is how I came up with 12'6"-13' as average for Indiana. I think Hunter has a skewed view of average in that he has not been in season lately and only jumping around experienced vaulters. His region also produces a higher number of 14' vaulters than most so his average will be different based on the pool of vaulters he is comparing.

Girls
3 over 13'
33 over 12'
107 over 11'

Boys
2 over 17'
16 over 16'
53 over 15'
167 over 14'
377 over 13'
468 over 12'

average - a quantity, rating, or the like that represents or approximates an arithmetic mean

BOYS
1. (2x17')+(16x16')+(53x15')+(167x14')+(377x13')+(468x12')= 13940'

2. 2+16+53+167+377+468= 1083 kids

3. 13940' / 1083 kids = 12.87165282 avg.

4. 12.87' average

thats not including all of the kids under 12 feet
