My coach said the school will buy me a new pole. Need help!

Unread postby TheBigMastodon » Tue Dec 26, 2006 1:25 pm

Alright I'm 6'1'' 175lbs. I should be more like 185 once outdoor season comes. Right now I am jumping on a 14-75 and I have my standards at 31". My PR is 13'. The only other pole my school has right now is a 15-75. I am referring to all USC Spirits.

Can anyone tell me what size pole I should get? Assume I will be 6'1" 185 by the time I will use this pole. Thanks.

Are you in high school or college? How high do you hold on your 13' pole?

Im a senior in high school. I dont use a 13' pole. I use a 14' 175. I hold at the pink stripe on the 14-75 Spirit. Its about 5 or 6 inches from the top.

I would say since you are only getting one pole, a 14'7" 180 or 185, whatever will fit your weight... if your standards are that far back, you are ready to move poles, and that should make a good transition for that 15' pole of yours! :)

If you are going to be 185, and jumping the same way, the 15 175 may be the next pole up for you, if you have gotten faster, and been working on technique.
You are already through the 14 175, which is 'equivalent' to a 15 165, so maybe the 15 175 is the next jump.
You may want to wait and find out before purchasing a pole in between that you might blow through.

Not if he is in high school. A 175 will be illegal if he weighs 185.

Tough to say about the pole, but I think it's a mistake to be putting on ten pounds in the next 2-3 months. Right now I'm 6'1, 175 lbs and I plan on vaulting at about 168.

Oh yeah, forgot about your high school rules.
With that said, I would agree not to put on any more weight, unless you are a decathlete...

I actually agree with that too. 6'1 175 is pretty solid. You should not be lifting in a way to try to gain mass. If you are doing Olympic lifts and you gain some weight anyway, that's one thing, but 10 pounds is an awful lot of muscle to put on between now and track season. You're not going to put on that much in that short of time without some effort.

Hey i believe you are a decathalete, but bro that shouldnt matter. Assume you are at the weight you are now, and get the right pole for that weight.

Thanks for your replies everyone.

I had a meet yesterday and this coach from Ithaca College told me I could definitely get on the 15 175 pole I have right now judging by my size, speed and takeoff. Now I dont think I need an in-between pole, but one to work with after the 15 175. Maybe a 15 185 would be good.

I know I'm good sized for a vaulter right now, but I'm playing college football next year and need to put on some weight for that. I have put on 25lbs in each of the last two offseasons for football and hope to do the same this year.
