Regardless of where the manufacturer places the top handhold band, each different length pole is flex tested and weighted for that particular length. A 13'6 140 is measured on the flex spans for 13'6 poles. 13'3 Altius poles, however, are measured on 13'0 spans, so consider a 13'3 Altius just any 13'0 pole with 3 extra inches on the top. The way the conversion works, is that a 13'6 140 will feel and react RELATIVELY the same as a 13' 150 with the same handgrip. Yes, lowering the handgrip will make the pole feel stiffer, but it will also increase pole speed and penetration. Raising the grip will make the pole feel softer but will decrease pole speed and penetration.

would cold weather effect the poles? Like should I use a softer pole because the weather is kinda chilly?

The weather affects YOU a lot more than it affects the pole. So yes, you may need a smaller pole, but it is not the properties of the pole that have changed significantly, it's you the vaulter.

This has been discussed on here before.

It all depends on your desire and ability. You speed doesn't matter either. What matters is your acceration at the box.
When I was 5'8" and weighed 132, my coach put me on a 15'9" 165 pound pole. I was vaulting at 16'6". th e next week I was injured when I couldn't get my steps and landed on the standards.

Perhaps I was pushed too hard. I woul dhave liked to work on technique a little more looking back.
My point is, raise your hand hold until you can't anymore.
Everyone has different abilities and desires. I never used under a 14 foot pole. I think anything less is useless.
If you don't have the ability, and you don't have the desire...............

It should be noted that this is in the running for the worst advice ever posted on this board.

Naw, I would say anything under a 16 foot pole is useless, cuzz the highest I could ever jump on the 15 footers was like 17'-6"

seconded, and I'll tell all you young vaulters out there why....

A high grip does not equal a high jump! Regardless of what anyone on here says, the main goal of any jump you take is to safely land in the middle of the mats! Theres a lot of advice given on this board, but not all of it is good advice.

Good ol' george strikes again!! If someone taught you how to pole vault that way im suprised you lived to tell your story. Ive seen people jump 14+ feet using a 13' pole, thats useless? and thats a rhetorical question, dont indignify yourself further with a response.

Yeah, I thought his advice sounded kind of dangerous?
