Does anybody know what's a good height for D III ? So far, I haven't seen a lot of big heights, but I haven't been able to see a lot of the bigger meets. I was a consistent 14' jumper last year, and I'm wondering how far I'll go in college.

14' might score at your conference meet.

Depends on the year. I went to Cortland State back in the mid 90's. I won the SUNYAC conference meet my freshman year with 14'0, and placed 4th my junior year with 14'6, 15'7 won that year. Then my senior year, we had a 20mph+ headwind out at Fredonia and just about everyone but myself and maybe 2 other guys no-heighted, and I won it with 13'0 on my short-run drill pole. Weather and mental-toughness in it definitely plays a part in jumping outdoors in the northeast! 14' is not a bad D3 jump at the conference level in most conferences, but you need to be in the upper 15's and above to have a shot at making nationals and winning ECAC's.

14' is definitely a solid conference meet scoring performance. If you are looking to compete in some of the larger meets and NCAAs you need to be looking at high 15s and above.

Since everybody's talking about the big dogs in D1, does anybody know of the main contenders for D3?? I'd be really interested to see who I'll be competing with if I make it past my conference and all that!

D3 gets good vaulters more often than you'd think. Just a few years ago Jeremy Scott went ~18-9, and Hans goin around 17-6 to 18 feet. Although the avg "good" vaulter is probably around 15 feet, and very good being 16 feet.

Any of those guys from Lacrosse or North Central can come out and put up big vaults. I see them at a couple meets a year and they always are doing good things.

DIII has been getting stronger every year... it might take a 16'0" jump to get into NCAAs this year. It would be nice to see some bigger jumps at nationals though... last year it seemed like it was a little weak at NCAAs (granted it was postponed after all the vaulters began warming up on the first day it was to be held).

14' is probably going to be competitive. in some conferences when I was vaulting it would be one of the better vaults. You need to look at the hieghts with in your conference. There can be a big variation from confence to conferece. My freshman year 1991 indoors in WI 15'6" placed 9th. mostly due to UW La Crosse
