High school junior kicks her way to the top
By Harry Porterfield
September 19, 2006 - A junior at Jacobs High School in Algonquin, Sarah Ross is in many ways a typical teen. Then she aims her gloves at you -- and very quickly you learn why Ross is a world champion kick boxer.

Ross started competing at eleven and since then she's earned all these belts
"I work to compete. I like the adrenalin rush. I like to train. For some people it's hard work to come here and get motivated and but I love it," said Ross.

The teenager is the only International Boxing Federation competitor to win five consecutive championships. Her coach is robbing Zbilski of Z's Martial Arts in Huntley.

"Her friends are going out and she's here training five days a week...I think that's what makes her a champion she gives up things makes sacrifices to get what her goal is," said Zbilski.

She not only excels at kick boxing but other events as well. At her school, she holds the record for 100 meter dash two relays and the record in the pole vault at 10 feet three inches.

"She's having fun with it. She likes the exposure. She likes to compete. She does well at anything she does. She's a good student-- grades are A and B's, so she's doing very well," said Zbilski.

Her college goal is to study biology.

"Most kids at school I see are not athletic and are not doing what they want to do...and I feel I've accomplished what I've wanted to do...not just sitting at home...I'm achieving aspects where other people aren't able too," said Sarah Ross.

Ross kicks off unique vaulting routine

By JUSTIN STOFFERAHN - editorial@nwherald.com

Do front kicks and punches have a place in track and field?

Jacobs junior Sarah Ross believes so. Before every race, Ross runs through her kickboxing routine.

“It is the motivational factor and it sort of intimidates the other runners,â€Â
