For example, the high school national record holder only got 80% at a major program but I've seen 16'0" guys on a full ride at smaller schools. There isn't a magic height that will get you a scholarship. Being flexible about where you are willing to go to school while carrying a good PR and good grades will get you a lot farther than just a good PR.

Also, it helps to be good in more than one event. Whether you jump 10' or 19', all you can score for your team is 10 points. And since a lot of coaching jobs ride on how they perform as a team at conference, it doesn't make a lot of sense to spend a lot of money on someone who can only score a maximum of 10 points when they can spent the same amount on a multi-eventer who can score in the 3-4 events and bring in 30+ points.

Anyway, if you really need the money, apply for academic scholarships and grants. That's a lot more stable source of money than an athletic scholarship which is only for one year anyway.

but dude u have 2 remember that every POINT counts to ur final score. i mean you could lose a meet because you didnt have that extra 10 points. it could be the difference of being 2nd in the NCAAs and 1st. every event and every point is needed!! and if you notice most of these guys jumping 17 feet in high school never really do much in college and those that jump 16 feet a lot of times go 18 feet or above eventually! Dave Volz went 16' in high school and later became an American Record Holder 18'10" at IU!! Also he went 19 feet at the olympic trials in 1992. Mark Buse and Danny Burton all got over 18 ft in college and only went over 16 in high school. 16 feet to me is an AMAZING jump in high school! But dont get me wrong im not sayin people who go 17 feet + in high school wont improve in college its just some reach their peak earlier than others...

Everybody always says this. I would bet that the percentage of 17' HSers that jump 18' is far better than the percentage of 16'ers that jump 18'+. How many 17' HSers have there been? 100? How many 16' HSers? 1000?

Just in Texas, 70% of the all-time 17' high schoolers jumped 18'+ and were at least one-time NCAA All-Americans. This can hardly be called not doing much. I wouldn't be surprised if this average holds nationwide.

When a 17'er doesn't improve in college, it's just much more noticeable than the hundreds of anonymous 16' & lower vaulters that tank.

Either way, who cares what they jump in HS, 18' in college is still 18'.

17' Texas HSers that jumped over 18' and were at least NCAA All-Americans once in college:

Eric Eshbach
Dale Jenkins
Jacob Davis
Steve Bridges
Jim Autenreith
Scotty Miller
Wayne Guidry
Jason Pearce
Jim Davis
Randy Hall
Roy Hix
Chris Bohannon
Toby Stevenson
Adam Keul
Rocky Danners
Bobby Most

17' Texas HSers that didn't jump over 18':
Jayson Lavender (17'10.5" as a SO, then quit to play football)
Jonathan Henley (17'3" as a FR, then quit)
Kyle Henderson (17'6.25" as a SO)
Scooter Hesseltine (17'1" as a FR, then only played football)
Sage Thames (severe shoulder injury but is trying to rehab at TxTech)
Brad Mayhew (didn't go to college)
Grant Henly (jumped one year at Sam Houston & quit)
"You have some interesting coaching theories that seem to have little potential."

Buse jumped 17' at TAC junior nationals a couple of weeks after the state meet. He had jumped 16' 10" prior to that during the season, so he wasn't JUST a 16 footer.

Not to mention that both jumped mid to low 16's in high school (not just a 16'0" jump).

Some states don't recognize records made after the State Meet.

State records in Indiana can only be set in the State meet. So Buse could have jumped anything during the regular season and it would not count as a state record.

but theres 2 kind of records, state record and state meet record. Campbell just managed 2 get his 16-9 at the state meet and that was the only time he did it. I promise you Buse never went 16-10 during the reg season. If he did it would be a school record for sure at southridge maybe somethin i need 2 check out
