Wow 17'5 before starting as a senior.... it seems every single year there are more and more 17' jumpers in the nation. Vaulting is really changing, im looking forward to a few years from now when 17 might be winning a state title but giving you 15th in the nation, that would be so amazing!!

It ebbs and flows. There is no reason to think there will be 15 HS guys over 17' anytime soon. There were years back in the 80s when there were multiple HS guys over 17'.

Hi, I'm Casey's Dad. I would *greatly* appreciate it if anyone has video or pictures. I couldn't be there to see the jumps (ran out of vacation days). By the way, after American Airlines wouldn't take Casey's poles at check-in due to their new "luggage container pods", BAX Global, stepped in with Steve Chappel's assistance (UCS Spirit) and got them shipped out in time. They really saved the day. They want to do a story on the whole incident for their company quarterly magazine and are also asking for photographs to use in the article.

Did American tell you they would fly poles? They normally don't anymore.

The article is for BAX Global's quarterly magazine. They said they don't often get a chance to spread the word among their employees about the good that is done by their going the extra mile.

American never said anything about any odd-size baggage limit. I think you have to ask explicitly about "vaulting poles" or "pole vaults" (the terms on their system).

Obviously this is going to be a problem for all traveling vaulters going forward. More airlines are using these containers in an effort to mitigate the effects of terrorist-planted bombs on aircraft. As they do, vaulters are going to have to ship poles at least FOUR *business* days in advance to the competitions, usually around a week. Anything faster will require air shipping and that's a no-go unless you're a "trusted shipper", i.e. a large company that they know and NOT a private party.

I think you'll see a lot of these types of problems in the near future for vaulters traveling to away meets.

I know this information is out of date, and I promise I will update it well before Reno, but I compiled information on all the airlines and their pole policies a few years ago: http://www.polevaultpower.com/airlines/

ALL airlines have size limitations on baggage. No airline allows baggage as big as poles, it is just a matter of whether or not they have a specific policy exemption for poles.

Any vaulter planning on flying with poles needs to do research on the specific policies of that airline and their plane size. This usually involves a call to the airline before buying the ticket to make sure the plane is going to be big enough.

The only airline that is the exception to this is Southwest. ALL their planes are big enough to carry poles, and they have a very well-written policy on poles. Unfortunately they don't fly everywhere.
