Morrison sets state record in pole vault

NEWPORT NEWS - The Eastern Region track meet will be remembered for a long time at Great Bridge High School.
Not only did the Wildcats win the boys and girls titles, but they did it with some remarkable performances.
Mike Morrison etched his name in Virginia track and field history on Saturday by clearing 17-6-1/2 in the pole vault. His performance erased Olympian and former Wildcat vaulter Lawrence Johnson's name from the meet record, school record and from first place on the state's all-time list. Morrison also now has the nation's top high school performance in the event this season.
"Everything just seemed to click today," said Morrison, who missed on three attempts at 18-0-1/2. "And when I got over it, I saw the bar move a little bit and hoped that it didn't fall. When I saw it stay up there, it was awesome."
