Unlocking the vault

As a high school athlete, Erin Asay's path seemed to be directed more toward a soccer field at UCLA than the pole vault pit at San Diego State.

San Diego State, Erin Asay, who switched easily from soccer to pole vaulting, is excited about her chance to compete in the NCAA Championships.
Then a junior at Sweetwater High, Asay (pronounced AY-see) had been invited to try out for the Bruins soccer team. But missing a key deadline meant Asay forfeited her chance to play at UCLA.

Years later, Asay has gone from budding soccer prospect to the steady senior force pacing a young Aztecs track and field team.

And with the last meet of her collegiate career ahead of her, Asay is not about to take lightly the opportunity facing her in next weekend's NCAA Championships in Sacramento.
