INDIANA STATE FAIR VAULT - IN ILLINOIS?!?!?!

Unread postby PVJunkie » Wed May 31, 2006 3:06 pm

The Indiana Sate Fair does not have room for the Indiana State Fair Pole Vault this year. It is the 150th anniversary of the fair and there is just NO WHERE to put us.

SSSOOOOO a new site has been found.....Im keeping it on the down low so dont tell anyone BUT I might be hosting the event on the BRAND NEW even FASTER runway behind the plant at Gill Athletics in Champaign Illinois. SSSHHHHHHH its a secret. If we pull this off over 100 poles will be avail on site for use (so you may not even have to bring poles). Same DJ as always (former 18 footer and oly trial qualifier Danny Burton). So keep checking back here.......for an update.

Dont tell ANYONE, I hope to have the info to the general public in the next few days.

The date is set, July 29th, the site.....well we will see.

The Indiana State Fair Pole Vault is the longest running BOARD runway event in the nation. Best guess.....every year for the past 25 yrs +........I jumped in it as a freshman in high school.....in 1982 and im pretty sure that was not the first year. I took over hosting/running it from Marshall Goss (former Indiana Univ assistant coach) about 9 or 10 yrs ago. Man Im gettin old.

Yes, it is an open event. Hope to see EVERYONE there, where ever there is....the location is still a SECRET.

I jumped in it in HS when it was still at White River Park. Why not have it someplace like that?

I like the Gill Plant idea. But only if we can get David to jump!

ITS OFFICIAL, MARK YOUR CALENDAR!!!!!!!!!

2006 Indiana State Fair Pole Vault Competition
Held at Gill Athletics in Champaign Illinois

STATE FAIR GENERAL INFORMATION
Due to the overwhelming vendor requests at the state fair (it’s their 150th anniversary) there was no room for us this year. So instead of canceling the event we will host it at Gill Athletics. BRAND NEW board runway (135 ft) with mondo glued just as before. If you thought my last runway was fast wait till you get on this one!!! You can mapquest us at 2808 Gemini Court, Champaign Ill 61822 for directions. Hopefully we will be back at the fairgrounds again next year, then again, I think the Gill Athletics site may be more fun. After 3:00 the runway is in the shade.

Register online at http://www.gillathletics.com – click on the picture of the vaulter half way down on the first page.

A list of poles that will be avail to use will be posted in that same section of the site (over 100 of them). Jeff will also be calculating the shortening of the pole as you vault (as a % of the overall length). Have you ever wondered how much or little you bend the pole, well you will find out.

We will run this competition in a very relaxed manner. The times are not flexible, but as in the past if there
is some free time you may jump as much as you like. It is up to you to determine what competition you will be
competing in and be on time for that event. My #’s are good but not so over whelming that I need to assign you
an event (The opening heights are flexible except for the Elite Men). Watching is Free, Participating is $25,
this entry fee gets you into an awesome competition.

The high school/masters/open competition will begin promptly at 11:00. Opening height will be determined by the
field. The height increments will be adjusted to accommodate a 2:00 finish time.

The women’s elite will begin at 2:30 (Warm ups will be allowed during the last ½hour of the masters competition with great respect to be paid to the competing athletes). Opening height will be determined by the field. The height increments will be adjusted to accommodate a 5:00 finish time.

The mens elite will begin at 5:30 (Warm ups will be allowed during the last ½ hour of the women’s elite competition with great respect to be paid to the competing athletes). The opening height will be no lower than 4.70m (15' 7").

If you are coming in the night before call me and I can make arrangements for a place to crash. Jeff Watry has a nice large yard so you can pitch a tent if we run out of floor space at our houses. There are also several reasonably priced motels in the area.

Directions to Gill Athletics in Champaign Illinois:
From I-74: Take the Neil Street exit and go north. Turn right on E Marketview. E Marketview ends (T’s) at Market Street, turn left (north) onto Market. Go to the first stop light and make a right onto Mercury Drive (this is the entrance to an industrial park). Go to Gemini Court and make a right and there we are. Please park in the lot in front of the bldg and bring your poles to the back using the right side (south side) of the bldg.

From I-57: Take the W Olympian Drive exit east. At Market Street turn right (south), go to the first light and turn left (east). Go to Gemini Court and make a right and there we are. Please park in the lot in front of the bldg and bring your poles to the back using the right side (south side) of the bldg.

Thanks for all your cooperation and support.
