Right now I can grip 12' from a 3 left approach, haven't tried any higher. You definitely need a high take off and jump for that else you won't penetrate into the box.

Exactly -but the idea is to continually try to more your grip up - even if only by a finger at a time.

but when you take off with this grip from 3 lefts you still want your sholders square and arms extended so as to simulate a real takeoff correct??
If you cant do it right , do if 10000 more times till you can

If you dont execute a 'real -upspringing - take off' you will not do well in this test - that is the point of doing it!

Another way to think of it is to take off so as to drive your top hand through the biggest arc you can handle -the higher the grip the bigger the arc and vice versa.

Try off six - the run will feel much more natural.

I tried. It will take some getting used to. I could only grip around 11' from 6.

[quote="altius"]The rule of thumb Petrov applied was that whatever height you achieved from six steps - stiff pole naturally - was the distance from which you should be able to take off from using your full run. In Bubka's case this was 4.25 metres, In jamica in 2002, Sergey confirmed that they used this test.

I am surprised no one has made a comment about him being able to hold roughly 14 feet from 6 steps.
Stiff Pole!!

Rotation of the pole must be your #1 focus. I love it. :)

Okay, now that we got it correct I have a 16'vaulter holding at 13'6" but when he moves up at all he drifts off to the left and comes up a little short. I don't have anyone else holding over 12'3". The kids like doing this as an early practice drill. They said it really helps to stretch out their shoulders and give them a feeling of confidence in their plant when we go to full approach.

No, it means if you put your toe at 11'-7" and reach straight up above your toe this is the hand grip you should be able to effectively move in to the pit! Just like Altius said in the first post.
