to practice getting vertical my coach makes us do drills on a pull up bar. hold the bar like you would hold your pole and swing your feet up over your head.

one of the other things that you could do when you swing up is to think about trying to get your feet behind the pole instead of just meeting it...that way, when the pole does recoil, you will be aligned straight with it (and come off of the top) instead of going off at an angle (and losing height)

it's a combination of the vaulter pulling through and pushing off of the top and the pole's recoil...but it's definitely not just the pole (it's more of an aid *along with the vaulter's own momentum*)
