Salera continues to set the mark

After Mike Salera tied his school's indoor record in the pole vault a few months ago, Washington Township High boys track and field coach Rich Bostwick thought it was just a matter of time before Salera broke the outdoor mark.

It didn't take long.

Salera broke the school record on Tuesday with a vault of 13-feet, 7 1/4-inches in an impressive 80-60 victory over rival Lenape.

"We thought the first good day (weather-wise), he'd have a shot at the record," said Bostwick.

Salera struggled with nagging injuries to his quadriceps and hamstring a year ago. He now seems to have those pains under control.

"He never really had a chance to heal last year because he works so hard training," said Bostwick. "He just now is starting to get into really good shape. We're even using him as a sprinter and a hurdler in dual meets now to help us win."

Bostwick said that Salera's goal is to reach 15 feet. He believes the senior has a chance.

"Hopefully, he can be consistent in the 14-foot range and get to 14-6," said Bostwick. "But, I think on a really good day, he could get to 15 feet."
