I don't really know that I would go to say that track athletes work harder, it's just different. I can recall one time that I puked from a track workout, but that was because I took half the rest and recovery cause it was cold out... that is my own fault.
I am not saying that track athletes don't work hard, we do. But its like saying that a sprinter workout is harder than a distance workout--and I don;t think it is, I've done both, it's just different thats all.

I just don't think you can compair the two even within the same sport. Distance runners could most likely finish a sprint workout easier than a sprinter could finish a distance workout.....the times woudl just be much slower for the distance runner where the sprinter may not be able to complete the mileage.
it is like comparing apples to oranges.

Thats GREAT point... show the races... not announcing the athletes names... and not to be cynical, but I don't care much to watch the 10 and under division of the 60m dash at the milrose games haha...

We have the same problem here at our school. I wrote a letter to the editor just last week about it. One excuse I've heard is that football and basketball are bigger money makers. From the information I've heard and the coaches I've spoken to, that is simply not true. Supposedly, (and this is third party information) there are only a dozen or so football programs in the country that are profitable. Most of the football programs across the country are HUGE money losers. In fact, from what I've heard, some lose millions. Between paying to travel all across the country and equipment, scholarships offered, etc... don't even come close to equalling out with ticket and concession profits. Track may not make money, but I'm sure it doesn't lose as much as football does. Another thing, and this is just my opinion, I've know track and field athletes to go on to become doctors, lawyers, etc... How many DI football players can fall into that category?

I realize that this is a generalization, football players do do this....but i totally agree with you....our guys and girls track and field teams are the most intelligent and drivin on campus.
A big reason for this is because few people have a lucrative future in track in field compaired to football. Unless you have the possibility to become and olympic athlete or get a sponorship, most track athletes to go school for.....SCHOOL.....football players will sometimes go to school for football.

They may lose money as a team but the schools recruitment statis goes with the football teams success. This is a cold, hard fact of college recruiting. How many non-athletic high school kids are seduced by the success of the track team?
Heck, how many kids even go and see a track meet at their school? When was the last time your school filled the stadium with fans for your last duel?
As a retired sport editor, I'll tell you that football will always be king. Be thankful that track is a spring sport and not a fall sport or it would get even less coverage than is does currently if that is possible.
With that being said, I'm a high school pole vault coach who loves our sport as much as everyone else on this board. I submit results and article to the local newspaper for my athletes. Sometimes they print them but most of the time they don't.
If you want more coverage, summit articles. College newspaper editors are generally lazy and a well written article will make it's way into your paper.
