Don't forget about Tommy's recent 5.79m jump.

..speaking of Jacob Davis, he went to high school with Eric Eshbach (not too uncommon knowledge) ...but did you know that Orangefield had another 17'er the year before too? That's no healthy... 2 17+ and an 18+ kid in 2 seasons, in high school... a lot of colleges don't do that even... thought that was kinda interesting.

Quit the sport 10 minutes before warming up for the NCAA championships his senior year.

He had bad back and hip problems...you get that from planting 5.00/10.x's 2 feet under...and was burned out.

Word is that he really just didn't enjoy pole vaulting. My current coach was his coach at Texas and said he didn't even want to vault in college but the only reason he did was because they offered him a full ride. Said he never vaulted in practice, just did the runs and would go over and long jump or do whatever event he wanted to do that day. I also heard that when he went 5.90 he has just come back from Burger King and hadent warmed up and jumped with his sweats pants on. Of course this could be a walk uphill both ways to class in the snow story that I sometimes suspect from some of my coaches stories.

He jumped an NCAA indoor record of 5.85 with his sweatpants on. Got a pic of that somewhere. After that, he then cut them off and wore those as his competition shorts. Pfaff told me that he vaulted once or twice in practice his freshman year and never again after that. I still think he had the most potential I've ever seen.

I'll post an animated GIF of his 5.90 vault. I know I've got that somewhere...

Yep, that's Jacob Davis smoking 5.90, great performance. But the real hero is that young man standing on the ground in the white hat watching J.D. That's Mike Korth, the hardest working man at UT, or in Texas for that matter. Shortly after that meet, Mike collapsed at the Texas High School Track championships. Mike had a brain tumour, had surgery and recovered. He's still the reason the Texas Relays runs without a hitch every year. Didn't mean to change the subject here, love Jacob Davis, just had to point out a fellow in the background that made sure everything was in order for that performance. And still does, thank goodnes.
compete and jump safe, have fun

what funny is both Henly and Eshbach (Jonathan Henly) is the 17 footer that was talked abotu earleir) both dont vault anymore because they dont enjoy it. Eric tried last year jumped 5.50 easy and walked away again. only vaulting he did this year was left handed... ha. Down in Orange they jumped everyday all year all the time for years and they all are burnt out...
