Just talked to my high school coach. They (King's) have 120 kids (on paper) turning out for track this year.
The enrollment of the high school is 380
I can't wait to move back this summer. They have a whole bunch of freshmen that are just starting to pole vault, and we'll be 1A again next year.
Not a bad turnout

that is awesome, maybe a big reason you guys were league champs last year. Is there a sport requirement there (you must participate in a sport sometime during the year)?
We have 35 out for track in a school of 800.....woo hoo!!!!
However my top three pole vaulters are back from last year, I just wish I could convince some freshman to come join us.
Maybe it has something to do with the $75 participation fee.

No sport requirement. It helps that King's does not offer very many sports. The only sport we compete with in the spring is golf. Most of the coaches in other sports encourage the kids to turn out for track to improve their athleticism.
$75 participation fee for a public school? Ouch

Some school districts in the Austin (TX) area are over $500 per kid per year. But, our school funding comes from beer cans collected on the highway and blood drives.

I know that is cheap relative to the cost of doing club sports, but I hate to see a participation fee keep any kid out of scholastic sports. Do they have a waiver for the poorest kids?
Poor kids usually have to find sponsors...I think some schools have a list of sponsors and they assign kids to them. I'm not too sure since I don't have kids. I hear coworkers complain about the $ for school sports all the time though.
