A couple of thoughts

1) Your grip is too high

2) You are throwing your head back in an attempt to "get vertical" (I hate that saying)

Suggestions

1) Lower your grip 4-6 inches and go down about 5lbs of pole

2) Once you have finished your swing and are looking up at your hands and feet, continue watching your feet as you push your hips up. This will keep you from throwing your head back and you will rise above your top hand better.

How did you learn to invert? Was it just swing ups and bubkas? I haven't concentrated on this during a vault but I'm just wondering because I can do it on a bar but I think there's a mental barrier that stops me on a pole. What were your first thoughts when you learned to invert?

I dont talk to anyone who uses a tap - which as you can see from this video encourages people NOT TO JUMP AT TAKE OFF. :crying:

The "tap" is what your coach is doing just before your take off. Tell him to STOP IT! It is doing you no good, it is not promoting safety. I'm sure his heart is in the right place but NO TAPS ALLOWED! He can check any of a dozen coaching websites and they all will agree. Don't get discouraged. Like Red Green and I say, "We're pullin' for ya, we're all in this together". Later.....Mike

oh, ok, but is it ok to have him there, like making sure that we don't fall backwards?

I'm guessing that is eric giving you the tap and i'm a bit surprised to see him doing that. Anyway if you need a tap then you need a smaller pole and i'm sure you have any pole you need. Keep working hard and good luck.

Vaultman hit 'er right on the head! I hope you keep up the great attitude and work ethic. You remind me a little of Mecham, you're a sponge for pole vaulting information. I do mean that as a compliment. As to a "tap" or a spotter, you should never make a jump or an attempt that would require someone throwing you back into the pit if you come up short. In most cases where that is attempted both parties involved get hurt. Later.....Mike

ahh, ok, thanks for the info, ill tell him what i have found out, and we will try to improve, i never knew that it was bad, cause i always could get on my poles at other schools, maybe he isn't pushing me that hard, but for the carbon i was on, he might have been, thanks for the info again.

As we keep repeating - the best way to avoid 'falling backwards' !!!! is to learn how to take off efficiently so that you -the athlete - can drive the vaulter/pole system deep into the pit in training without any outside help.
