This is what I heard what happens.
They take the best vaulters from last season, elite that is, and ask them to vault on stage a couple of weeks before they show up. First of course, asking if they're coming or not. Some are pretty much regulars that jump on stage. Hartwig, Hysong, Harvey, Dragila, Suttle, and so on. But, sometimes they ask for up and comers to vault on stage like a week in advance. Norberg, King, Skipper, Johnson, whoever.
You could probably figure out who's jumping by who's jumped what according to they're class of competition. Elite and College. Haven't heard of a High Schooler on stage before though.
I've even heard of some vaulters are asked the day they arrive to the Hotel or that Friday before the competition. So who knows.
But, of course this is what I've heard, I could be wrong.

I got on the stage a few years ago and it was awesome. Coach Fraley sent me a letter after Clovis that indicated I may be on the stage in reno. If I remember correctly Coach Fraley brings in the big boys and some "extras"/up-and-comers. The day before the competition he annouced those who will be on stage. I believe this is mainly for the "extras". I doubt the big boys would tolerate any uncertainty. All I know for sure is that being on the stage was the best competition I have ever been in. Way better than USAs. The stage, the lights, the crowd. It was like the runway was down hill. I was very lucky to have had that opportunity and will never forget it and those that made it possible.
I did NAPVA the year before and I think was was one of the big reasons why Coach Fraley gave me the chance to be on the stage.
I'll be back at the summit this year after missing last year. The difference is that I'll be in the open men 8 (or lower) competition. I am estimating that each semester of dental school will take a foot off off any previous PR.
See ya in RENO
