This Eurosport guy clearly does not understand how jump-offs work...

21:40    Earlier, Isinbayeva went really really close to a new World Record, but brought the bar down with her arm coming down, she got way above the bar, looks like saving herself for the World Championships in Helsinki...

21:39    And Jeng gets really high but takes it down at the end.

21:39    Jeng up now, it's started raining, none of them have cleared this height yet so why is it so high for the jump-off??!

21:38    Hysong fails at his first attempt...

21:38    Men's Pole Vault - they've taken the bar down to 5.70 now, should see a winner soon...

21:46    This Pole Vault jump-off is borderline painful, the guys are knackered, cold and wet and clearly want to go home, bless.

Hooker misses, so the long painful jumpoff should be over. Jeng is the winner!

Hmm the Eurosport guy is reporting something different than the DN Galan website. I'm not sure if I trust him.

21:55    Pole Vault - Hooker's just cleared the jump off height too, so he's tying with Jeng...

Isinbayeva wins diamond with stadium record triumph at Stockholm athletics meeting

www.chinaview.cn 2005-07-27 09:01:39

STOCKHOLM, July 27 (Xinhuanet) -- Olympic champion and world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia became the first diamond winner at the IAAF meeting DN Galan Super Grand Prix, as she set astadium record of 4.79 meters in the pole vault event on Tuesday.

According to the track meet organizers, each mark set on Athletic meeting is worth a 1-carat diamond valued at 10,000 US dollars (8,300 euro).

Isinbayeva attempted to set her 18th world record when she tried to clear 5.01 but narrowly missed out.

Four days ago at Crystal Palace in London, the Russian became the first woman in history to clear five meters.

Poland's Anna Rogowska was second at 4.65 meters, while Monika Pyrek third at 4.65.

Isinbayeva Breaks Record at DN Galan Meet

Tuesday, July 26, 2005

Yelena Isinbayeva broke the women's Olympic Stadium pole vault record Tuesday with a leap of 15 feet, 8 1/2 inches to win a $10,000 diamond at the DN Galan track and field meet.

The Olympic champion cleared 5 meters (16-4 3/4) in London four days earlier for her 17th world record _ indoors and out.

"It was difficult for me because after the world record in London I felt very tired in my head and in most of my muscles," said Isinbayeva.

Hooker second after jump-off

27jul05

AUSTRALIANS had plenty of drama but little success at the Super Grand Prix athletics meeting in Stockholm this morning (AEST).

Pole vaulter Steven Hooker was the only one to taste success, finishing second to Sweden's Alhaji Jeng in a rarely seen jump-off.

Hooker had tied for first place with Jeng and American Nick Hysong after all cleared 5.65 metres but failed on all three attempts at 5.75 metres.

A countback could not separate the trio, so, after three hours in the middle of Stockholm's Olympic Stadium, they conducted a jump-off to find a winner.

All three failed their single attempts at 5.75 metres and 5.70 metres.

Hysong missed at 5.65 metres but Jeng cleared the height, leaving Hooker under pressure to stay in the contest.

He went under the bar to give victory to the local.

A brave attempt at 5.01m

After surpassing 5m only last Friday, one would have forgiven Yelena Isinbayeva, the Overall number one IAAF World Ranked female athlete, if feeling the cold weather, that after taking the Pole Vault win (4.72m) and the stadium record (4.79m), she had retired for the night.

However, that just isn’t the Olympic champion, as she always wants to make history, and so she gamely raised the bar to the would be World record height of 5.01m. Her first attempt was quite close, she then ran through the second approach, while her third effort set the bar bouncing into the air, as she clipped it on the way down.

Still a diamond bonus was hers, as she had surpassed World champion Svetlana Feofanova’s 4.78m Stadium record (2002), something to warm the heart and the pocket of even the coldest of athletes.

The two Poles, Anna Rogowska and Monika Pyrek, were respectively second and third, with the same height of 4.65m, split on count back.
