Record-breaking Isinbayeva vaults five metres
Saturday July 23, 05:53 AM
LONDON, July 22 (Reuters) - Olympic pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia became the first woman to clear five metres at the London Grand Prix meeting on Friday.
The 23-year-old sank to her knees in disbelief after comfortably sailing over the height on her first attempt and only her fifth vault of the competition.
Isinbayeva had broken her own world record on her previous vault when she cleared 4.96 metres, to better the 4.95 she set in Madrid on July 16.
It was Isinbayeva's fourth world record this month and the 17th of her career since clearing 4.82 two years ago.
Poland's Anna Rogowska was second with a national record of 4.80 metres after failing her three attempts at the then world record height of 4.96.

Olympic pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva created another piece of history at Crystal Palace as she soared beyond the 5m barrier to set yet another world record.
The Russian cleared it at her very first attempt - putting Janine Whitlock's new British mark of 4.47m somewhat in the shade.

Isinbayeva sets historic new mark
Isinbayeva has set a succession of new world records
Yelena Isinbayeva became the first woman in history to clear five metres as her domination of the pole vault continued at Crystal Palace on Friday.
It marked the 17th world record of her career and the second time she has set a new world best at the London meeting.
The 23-year-old cleared 4.96m - breaking her own week-old record of 4.95m - minutes before breaking the 5m barrier at her first attempt.
Isinbayeva entered at 4.70m, and also cleared again at 4.80m.
"It was very, very important for me," she told BBC Sport.
"It was my dream and my goal to be the first woman over five metres. I'm so happy that it's a reality, it's amazing."
And the Russian admitted that her next target is overtaking Sergei Bubka's total of 35 world records.
"I would like to have 36 world records," said the Russian. "It's my new goal."

Russia's Yelena Isinbayeva made history when she became the first woman to break through the five-metre barrier as she set a new world record in the event at the Super Grand Prix meeting here.
Her giant leap came just minutes after she had set another new world record of 4.96m, which had in turn bettered the previous best of 4.95 also set by Isinbayeva at the Super Grand Prix in Madrid on July 16.
The two quickfire leaps were her 16th and 17th world records of her career.
Her record-shattering performance came eight years and nine days after Ukraine legend Sergei Bubka became the first man to vault six metres.
"To be the first woman to go to five metres is very important," said Isinbayeva.
"It has always been my dream since I started pole vaulting. It's amazing and I am very happy.
"Now I want to go even higher. I think I can make 5.5 metres."
Isinbayeva, the reigning Olympic champion, will also be a lot richer after her exploits. A prize of 50,000 dollars is paid every time a world record is set.
