majors and minors

i was looking through the list of majors for different colleges and some had minors, and can anyone tell me the difference between a major and a minor

a Major is what you're dedicating the majority of studies on. A minor is sort of a "concentration", but not in your major.

For example, my girlfriend has a Major in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. She could do a minor in Math if she wanted, but she couldn't do a minor in Accounting

I have a Computer Science major, but I can't do a minor in Web Design because it's in the same area as my major.

You can also do a minor in a completely unrelated field...eg. a Biology major w/ a music or history minor...if you're really interested in it.

You can also have more than one major...and you have to have a major, but don't need a minor.

I'm a biology major and will either have a psychology or PE minor...or maybe no minor at all with just a bunch of random psych and PE classes....

You can also minor in something and then later on decide to major in it. Pretty much, if once u minor, or get and AA or ne degree, you dont need to worry about credits transfereing, they just take the degree and what not

came from the goal to have the student experiance academic diversity
with the major being coursework in the area you are most interested in.
It usually is about 30 credit hours. You can select a minor in another
area (thus the required diversity) this minor (typically about 20 credit hrs)
could be a second area you are interested in or it could be a complemetary area i.e. a Biology Major with a Chemistry Minor--- the two sciences overlaping and strengthening the other. The third component of diversity is usually a set of required areas of General Studies which you usually don't get to choose.
So, you pick your Major based on what you want to do with your college
degree when you are done.
That may be more than you wanted to know-- but you know-- or will
know how long winded (worded) some professors can get--
