Unusual turn of events.....

Unread postby indestructo » Thu Mar 20, 2003 12:18 pm

I just got word from my school (michigan tech) that due to the upcoming budget cuts to school funding they decided not to cut track or CC, but instead to cut the Football program!! I've never seen a track program more neglected then ours nor a more glorified football program then ours(even tho both programs haven't had a winning season in decades). While it is unfortunate for those football players, it will be a HUGE boost to our track program. Maybe we'll even get a scholarship now!!!!

Last year they threatened cutting our Nordic skiing progam even tho its the only program that year in and year out sends athletes to the national championships. Its nice to finally see the department heads screw their heads on straight!!

 :D

wow...now thats...different...i can't imagine a school getting rid of football over ANY other sport! football is an overglorified sport in general. i think its ridiculous how much money scholls give the football team, while other sports/activities are given grossly lower budgets... my school's marching band for example...an extremely expensive activity, yet our budget is low enough that in order for us to maintain our reputation as one of the best bands in missouri, each band member is required to pay about $500 so we can pay our staff, entry fees for competitions, and other expenses...not that it doesn't suck for those football players, but its kinda nice to see a focus on something OTHER than football...

Keep in mind that at most DI schools, football pays for track. I doubt track is a revenue producing sport anywhere. Yeah it is kinda disgusting how much stuff football gets, but they've kinda earned it.

at our school however, football is not a revenue producing sport either. They lose more money then probably all the other sports combined. when $1mil can be spent on football and then turn around to track and spend $15k for both mens and womens combined(this includes coaches salaries), it gets a little ridiculous.

And with the kind of coaches they have its hard to believe that they haven't lost the program sooner. I've never met more disrespectful coaches and staff anywhere ever! I filed many complaints last year, and I'm glad to see them gone!!

Thats where your wrong. MOST D1 programs loose $$ on a reg basis. Only a very small % are a contributing factor to the overall ath budget. Those are the big time programs. Remember there are literally thousands of D1 programs and only a few of them make a bowl or have a lagre enough donar base to "make" $$. The fact is football is expensive but the admin is very supportive and would rather cut 3 other sports to keep football.

OK OK... football pays for track at my school :P

I think our track team has a pretty good relationship with the football team. We are jealous of the ridiculous amount of stuff they get, but most of us are huge football fans, and appreciate the free football tickets we get ;)

Plus we get umm blessed by the prescence of a few football players in the spring who want to sprint or whatever.

see our football coaches wouldn't allow any of the football palyers to join track.....so we got screwed on that aspect too. It'll be interesting to see how many football players join the track team now, cause I know a lot of them wanted to, but couldn't because of thier arrogant coaches....
