Records keep falling at state

BLAINE, Minn. (AP) - Day Two of the Minnesota state high school track and field meet began just as Day One did - with a new state record.

Robbinsdale Armstrong junior Alicia Rue broke the state pole vaulting record with a vault of 12 feet, nine inches on Saturday. Rue broke the previous mark of 12-7 1/2, set last year by Bemidji's Andrea Smith.

"That was exciting," said Rue, who had jumped 12-9 earlier in the season. "It was early, but I was ready."

Rue also took second in the Class AA 100-meter hurdles in 14.92 seconds, just behind winner Sasha Gangl of Elk River/Zimmerman, who finished in 14.91.

Alicia took some good attemps at 4.00m but had to hurry off to go run the 100HH which she won the year before. She ended up finishing second at the line by 1/100th of a second.

The Falcons finished in eighth place in Class 2A with Rue, a senior, accounting for all 25 points. She was second in the 100 hurdles, seventh in the 300 hurdles and won the pole vault with a state meet-record vault of 12 feet, 9 inches.

She is actually a Junior, not a senior. Not sure where they got that from.

Rue vaults to title, state record

Alicia Rue will be able to defend a state track title again next year, however, it will be in a different event.

The Armstrong junior was nipped at the wire as she attempted to defend her state crown in the 100-meter hurdles Saturday in Blaine.

The disappointment was overshadowed by Rue’s success in the pole vault. She set a state record by going 12-feet, 9-inches to earn the gold medal.

The Falcon junior added to her stash of state hardware by placing seventh in the 300-meter hurdles.

Rue went a respectable 14.92 in the 100 hurdles, but Sasha Gangl was a step faster at 14.91.
