EAST PEORIA - Morgan Ryan began pole vaulting a year ago because she wanted to do something different.
"I wanted to do something not a lot of other people were doing," she said at EastSide Centre.
The Metamora seventh grader did something Saturday at the Illinois Elementary School Association Class A track meet most other competitors didn't; she broke the seventh-grade state pole vault record twice.
Ryan cleared 7 feet, 7 inches and 7-9 before bowing out at 7-11 and taking second place. The previous record was 7-6.
Emily Clay of Bloomington Cornerstone eventually cleared 7-11 to set the record and win the title.
