Prep track: Lindberg, Preble teams rule FRVC meet






Southwest pole vaulter Andy Lindberg soared to a state-best 14 feet, 9 1/2 inches

With winds howling and sleet flying, it was a miserable day for the Fox River Valley Conference track and field meet.
However, it was a great day to be an Andrew.

Andy Lindberg, Green Bay Southwest's prolific pole vaulter, cleared a state-best 14 feet, 9 1/2 inches to turn in the most spectacular performance of Thursday's meet at Notre Dame Academy.

Meanwhile, Andrew Belter, Green Bay Preble's senior sprinter, also enjoyed a memorable afternoon. Belter was a double winner in the short dashes - rocketing to personal-record times in both sprints - and won a third medal by running the anchor leg of the Hornets' winning 800-meter relay team.

Preble dominated the team competition, winning both the boys and girls meets.

Preble piled up a massive 238 points to breeze to the boys title - a mere 134 points better than runner-up Green Bay East. It was the Hornets' seventh consecutive FRVC boys title and 14th in the last 17 years.

The Preble girls generated 160 points to hold off second-place Green Bay East and claim their fourth straight FRVC championship.

"Considering the conditions, we had a really good day," said Preble boys coach Pat Prochnow. "It's a prestigious meet for the kids."

Lindberg shattered his previous state best of 14-7 1/4, set May 3 at the Green Bay City Meet. He cleared 14-9 1/2 on his second attempt at the height. He then took three unsuccessful cracks at 15-0, just missing a successful vault on his second jump.

"It really wasn't a great vault - I didn't have my best technique on it - but I was able to get over," Lindberg said of his state-best jump. "When it started hailing earlier in the meet, I was getting pretty concerned that they would cancel the pole vault. I'd rather vault in the rain than not vault at all."

Jerrad Perkins, Southwest pole vault coach, was stunned that Lindberg was able to go so high on such a wretched afternoon. Trojans teammate Ryan Richardson was second in the event at 13-6. "I figured our guys would go between 13-6 and 14, and that would be it," Perkins said.

Belter also delivered the type of performance one wouldn't expect in 40-degree weather. His impressive 100 dash time of 10.81 seconds eclipsed his previous best of 11.10 and will put him in the top 10 of the event on the state honor roll.

Belter also held off speedy Southwest sophomore Ben Foelker in the 200 with a PR of 22.41 - the ninth-fastest clocked time in Wisconsin this spring.

"It was so cold that I warmed up and stretched a little more than usual, and that might have made a difference," Belter said. "I felt great. I had great starts in both races, and that's something I've been working on."

Preble's Steve Van Rite (110 high and 300 low hurdles) and Steve Marcelle (shot put, discus) also won two individual events apiece.

Van Rite, who has been beaten only once all spring, blew away the competition in the 110 hurdles with a sublime time of 14.67, the fastest in Wisconsin this season. Van Rite's 39.86 time in the 300 also was a personal best and elevates him to fifth in the event on the state honor roll.

"The wind actually really helped me because it was at my back in the 110," Van Rite said. "We haven't had a meet in a week, so I had a lot of rest, and that helped, too."

Another outstanding time was turned in by the Trojans' Foelker, who took the 400 in 49.93.

The upset of the boys meet came in the 800 run, in which Southwest senior Robbie Wilcox made up substantial ground the final lap and edged Preble's Kyle Soukup at the tape to win in 2:01.24. "I had a lot left and thought I might have enough to catch him, so I just went for it," Wilcox said.

The top performers in the girls meet were double winners Paula Delsart (100 and 300 hurdles) and Anne-Marie Boyd (800 and 1,600) of Preble, Ellen Rohan (100 and 400 dashes) of Southwest and Katie Fondow (long jump and triple jump) of Green Bay West.

It was the second straight double-victory meet for Delsart, who has missed most of the spring with injuries to her ankles. She won both hurdles events at last week's city meet.

"I'm getting more consistent practice time, and that's helping a lot," Delsart said. "I feel like I'm getting back into things."

The surprise race of the girls meet came in the 200, in which Preble sophomore Lauren Seidl clocked in at a swift 26.03 to nip Manitowoc Lincoln's Megan Fischer (26.09) and East's Angel Eggleston (26.49).

"I felt great - I've never been able to beat Angel," Seidl said. "I just pushed it all the way."
