stretch...stretch...stretch... three times a day morning, noon and night...
stretch the claves by standing a few feet from a wall... lean in, keeping the heels down... the idea is to stretch the back/calf of the lower leg so the strength of the muscles don't keep "yanking" the front muscle like a banjo string..
and wear two pair of tube socks... to the knee... keeps the muscles warmer and gives support so they don't separate from the bone as much... i know it's not kool... but bubka wore them for some reason???
does anyone else understand what i just wrote and can explain it better.. you medical people???

some shin splints are caused by in imbalance of anterior and posterior muscle groups. Tapping ur toes when your bored helps strenghten your anterior muscles those that counteract your calf. Also, u can trace the alphabet with ur toes which is more fun the tapping your toes. School is a great time to do this, lol, but remeber to pay attention first.

walking on your heels (only heels, keeping the toes in the air) can help if it's just shin splints. running barefoot in grassy areas i hear helps too.
like some people have mentioned, make sure you have proper shoes. go to a specialized track store where the employees actually KNOW what they're talking about (Not sports authority, foot locker, or any of those places), and they will look at your feet and tell you what kind of shoes you need, and help you find the right pair. wearing the wrong shoes can also cause knee problems.
I agree that you really should go see a doctor, I've never known shin splints to last overnight. It sounds likely that you could have stress fractures
