A quick update and thanks

Thanks for all the help. We had our first day of regions yesterday and our vaulter did well. The freshman did ok and jumped 8'6 while our Junior jumped 11'0 and won region. Now we have a 1.5 weeks to get ready for state.

DJ, thanks for the advice about going back to her old pole and shortening her approach. That is what we did and it made a difference.

After yesterday, I talked our coach into getting a new pole. Yesterday, we shortened her approach and she jumped on her old pole which was a 12'1 130 lbs. with the standards at 30. She is still having a problem getting on the 12' 140 lbs Pacer. So, I'm going to buy a 13' 130 Spirit and drop her grip down so that it should equate to about 135 lbs. Hopefully, this will be a good in between pole.

Is this a good step? Any suggestions?

great job..

sounds good... i think the difference between a 1230 and 1330 is ? 7lbs.. if may not be necessary to drop her grip... just keep jumping like she is jumping and the longer "stiffer" pole will take her more vertical with the same effert...

the 1330 also gives you room for more grip if needed later...

take care

Look at this chart: http://skyjumpers.com/articles/relitive ... _chart.htm

It is extremely accurate. The equivalent stiffness 13'0 pole to a 12' 130 would be a 13' 110 at the same handgrip. The equivalent stiffness 13'0 pole to a 12' 140 would be a 13' 120 at the same handgrip. If you move the grip up 6 inches, the pole will feel approximately 10lbs softer. Moving the grip that much though completely changes the dynamics of the jump and will make it harder to swing.

I would recommend a 12'6 125 to bridge the gap.

I can sympathize with your frustrations. Last year we had a girl vaulter who was a multi event athlete. As a result, she only practiced the vault once or twice a week and then only for part of the practice. We were frustrated because she could have learned much more in the vault, but we appreciated her performance in the other events. As it was, at the state meet she tied for first in the vault (took second because of one more miss), and won most of the other events she entered. The school placed 4th (you could say SHE placed 4th because all points were hers) and she was selected as female athlete of the meet. When all was said and done, I was just pleased to have been able to work with her.

I look forward to reading how your vaulters do.

One of my sophomore girls is 6'0 tall and won state last year with 12'0 as a freshman. She's in a 3A school and does:

Football (yes, with the boys, wide receiver on JV)
Volleyball
Basketball
Softball
Tennis
Track (lj, pv, 200, 400, 4x2, 4x4, sometimes hj)
Band

She smoked 11'0 last week at the Regional Qualifiers Meet, then had to go run the 4x2. She ran back after the race to the pv, and was the only vaulter left in at 11'6, while 3 others had cleared. They gave her all of 1 minute to take her first attempt, then 90 seconds in between the 2nd and 3rd. She missed all 3 of course, because she was dead from running.

The curse of the small school strikes again!

That varies by state. Texas lets them do as many sports as they want. This year, Ari did football and volleball in the fall, basketball in the winter, and track, softball, and tennis in the spring. All for her school
