This quote is a bit heavy but it probably does apply to pole vaulting. It comes from USAF Colonel John Stapp who spent his professional life studying the effects of very rapid positive and negative accelerations on the human body - his own!

He said, "The universal aptitude for ineptitude makes any human accomplishment an incredible miracle".

He apparently made this comment when he noticed that a technician had incorrectly wired a critical component of the rocket sled he was about to ride. :(
