People running their steps back at big meets annoys me...anyone else feel that way? And by what year of vaulting should vaulters know their steps so they dont have to run them back on meet days...I'm trying to tell the freshman on my team to know them but i know i didnt freshman year...any thoughts?

Jan likes to refer running ur steps back as "yahooism" I don't mind ppl running there steps back in the beginning, but once every1 is doin full jumps, its just annoying. You should learn ur steps when u know ur run is consistant, so it all depends.

that would suck if the standards have to be at 18 now. I vault with my standards at 15, but am currently trying to move them back.

I admit that when I first started vaulting I had to run my steps back at every meet I went to, but I at least realized that I needed to get to the pit early and run them back before everyone started their run throughs and I had to move 25 people off the runway to do it. Those are the people that really annoy me!

i agree on people running their steps back well into warm ups, i absolutly HATE IT. I have every step from 2-9 lefts memorized and marked out on the runway, as do everyone i vault with. i can understand when younger vaulters dont know their steps yet and thats alright, but they need not wiat until 10 minuets left of warm ups to finally get them.
And aroudn here in michigan in 3 years of high school track so far I have yet to be at a meet where a cross bar or bungee was put up in warm ups. And if that did happen id probably get annoyed (i dont swing up vaults in warm up) and 'accidently' knock it down
What have you done today to get better?

thanks for clearing that one up...i think i'm just gonna have to print up that revision list for future reference in case any other meets try to put them at 18 (as far as i know, missouri doesn't have any different rules), because i definitely need them at 16 right now...i'm working on getting them back though...i always practice with them at 21 (although thats really just because thats where they already are, and they're too much of a pain to move all the time lol)

When you jump with your standards at 16, do you land in the coach's box marked on the pit top cover? I am one of those (volunteer) coaches that tells kids they should practice with the standards at 80cm (31.5"). This is for safety and it forces you to learn proper technique. It will also discourage a vaulter from moving their hand grip up before they are really ready.

At every practice I help coach and when myself and my friends are practicing - the standards sit back around 30'' or as far as we can get them - and then we never move them forward.

If you're landing that shallow then you really need to lower your grip and work on getting deeper into the pit.

our pit doesnt have a "coaches box"...but i dont get close to landing back in the box when i vault. one comment i'm gonna make in defense of having close standards...if i were a guy, i wouldn't have such a problem with hitting the bar coming down, if you catch my drift...

Let's see, if I recommend the standards at 31.5" for guys, and you are currently at 16" and need some compensation for your "assets", how much of the 15.5" difference do you suppose is reasonable. Don't answer that question here, just think about it when you set your standards. ;)
