With no disrespect to Bubka - it had much more to do with money. Which makes sense really - gotta keep the sponsors happy and keep collecting that 50g's everytime you break the record. Not exactly the truest form of sport, but hey it puts food on the table.

However you're definitely right, that if someone else was right on his heels, he would have had to have gone for even higher heights.

Oh yeah, I know that money was ultimately the issue behind his breaking the record 1 cm at a time....but if someone had been competing with him, I don't think he would have been able to do that...at least not so frequently.

Hypothetical question....if two individuals break a record, and one wins on scratches....who do the sponsors give money to for breaking the record? I assume the individual who won the competition?

depends on who broke it first, I would think? if they both broke it on their first try, or 2nd, or 3rd

I don't have an answer to your post, but speaking of records I find this interesting. At the 2003 Nike Indoor Nationals, my son Chase cleared the meet record height of 17' (his first 17' bar). Then Tommy Skipper cleared it as well and went on to move it higher to 17' 4" range. I find it interesting that his record is not and will not be mentioned in the records any where since he had it to himself for only 3 to 5 minutes, shared it for another 15 or 20 minutes, then lost it all together. Makes you go "H'mmmm"
