Dominic Devaud, Archbishop Curley

The junior did not lose a single pole-vault competition.

Some notable victories in the event include the Frostbite Invite (13 feet, 3 inches), the Lebanon Valley College Indoor Invitational (13-3) and the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association championships (13-0).

Devaud's vault of 13-4 at the Prince George's Sportsfest is tied for the best mark registered by a metro athlete.

Joe Dillard, Perry Hall

The junior, who finished second in the pole vault to Archbishop Curley's Dominic Devaud at the Frostbite Invite, captured the event at the Baltimore County (12 feet, 6 inches) and Class 4A-3A Central Region (12-8) championships.

Dillard's best performance came at the state championships, where he grabbed the pole vault title with a height of 13-4.

Tim Wunderlich, North Carroll

The versatile senior qualified for four individual events at the Class 3A-2A state championships for the second straight year.

Wunderlich placed second in the high jump, third in the shot put and pole vault and fourth in the 55 hurdles at the state meet.

The two-time Carroll County Performer of the Year and All-Metro choice took the shot put (48 feet, 0.5 inches) and the pole vault (12-6) at the county championships.

Dominic did not lose a single meet, but he won 2 or 3 meets by heights, a Gilman kid, who is just as good and will give him a run for his money. Also, Dominic was given All-American Status when his SHR relayd played third at Nike. His bro Charles (HS PR of 14'9) vaults for UMBC and he won Maryland Performer of the year hos senior year...very atheltic family. That is the 3 year in a row that a Vaulter has swept the vault all season, his brother, me :D and now him.

The pole vault pit had a lively competition between Connellsville's Jarred Harrer and Uniontown's Matt Roebuck. Both stayed alive in the waning sunlight, each pushing the other to another height.

Harrer cleared 13-feet, 6 inches in the end to win the final five points for the Falcons. Roebuck finished at 13-feet with Tyler Nicholson scoring a third for Connellsville.

That wasn't AA, just the Richmond Times-Dispatch rankings for the Central Region. Thus the reason Kiernan Lofland from St. Christophers, a private school, is mixed in with the AAA kids from Atlee and Godwin etc....

South pole

An interesting battle is shaping up in the local pole vault competition. Council Rock-South's Max Chichkin's chief threat might come from Central Bucks South's Duane Hynes.

The thing is, Hynes might have some other things on his mind - like the decathlon.

Wait, you say. There's no decathlon in high school track and field. Exactly. Hynes recently took part in an "open'' decathlon at Princeton (where he qualified for national competition).

Apparently, the PIAA is OK with this.

Meanwhile, Chichkin is only a sophomore.

"We've put some energy, some focus on our vaulters,'' CR-South coach Joe Warwick said. "We have four kids over 11 feet right now.''

both of them are really cool people. in the summer i did a decath for the first time and met duane. really nice and helped me out kinda. and this past weekend i had a meet agianst chichkin, i didnt talk to him much but he seemed pretty cool. i was actually disapointed that i lost to him cause i beat him in a meet earlier in teh season.. didnt kno he was only a sophmore though, hes got alot of potential. almost had 14' that day. he went from 12'6-14 sat cause i didnt make 12'6 bah.. do u kno how high duanes jumping now? i remmeber he got like 11' in teh summer. hes big though so i think he could easily be doing 13+
i run, therefore im buff.
