Palo Verde High School's Cherelle Sims (left) receives the baton from teammate Taylor Ginger in the 4x100-meter relay yesterday at Drachman Stadium in the Willie Williams Track and Field Classic.
Caitlin Clancy has been making the most of her air time.

The junior at Canyon del Oro High School got over the bar at 11 feet, 4 inches to set a personal best in winning the girls pole vault at the 21st annual Willie Williams Track and Field Classic yesterday at the University of Arizona.

She later failed in three tries at 11-7.

"I have been trying to work as hard as I can," Clancy said. "I have been ready. It was bound to happen some time."

Clancy is off to a quick start this spring after finishing second in the pole vault last year at the Class 5A South Region meet with a best clearance of 9-6. She has cleared at least 11 feet in each of her three competitions this season.

"When I clear a high, it just gives me energy and determination to clear the next one," she said.

Clancy's victory led a big day in competition for local girls. Local vaulters grabbed nine of the top 10 finishes.
