Field events always get the shaft

Unread postby soonervaulter » Wed Mar 16, 2005 2:15 pm

i was just watching the NCAA championships, waiting patiently to see the mens or womens pole vault. I should've known that they would only show the winning vault from each competition!!!! They did that with every field event, only showing the winning jump or throw. I'm sorry but i would much rather see someone pole vaulting than a bunch of people running around in circles!!!!!! I mean, come on, do we really need to see every lap of the mile?

The pole vault didn't break any records this year, while there were multiple NCAA, American, and even a WORLD record broken in the running events.

it was on espn2 from like 11:30 to 1 or so. I know there were a lot of great performances on the track but it still pisses me off that they can't show more than just ONE clearance in the vault.

True that the indoor 400 record set by Michael Johnson that was 10 years old was broken, but field events are just as important. Tommy Skipper is a Sophmore who is first in the country, that should carry some weight. Secondly, no offense to distance runner, but i hate watching someone run around the track 16 times, they could at least update field events or show clips during the first couple of laps where the pace is established. Thirdly...someone should start a track and field network, i'd so watch it :D

I'm sorry, but average performances in the field events are not as important as someone breaking a world record in a well established event.

And Tommy being a sophomore is not that big of a deal to the networks. The guy who broke the world record in the 400 is a sophomore too I believe.

Yeah, Clemonts is only 19 years old and broke a world record that was set when he wasn't even in the double digits yet.

Although tommy did't come close to his all time pr, there were 4 guys over 18 feet. I would hardly call that "average."

I meant that field events are important to the sport of Track and Field in whole. And yes Clement is a sophmore. Is the 400 a spotlight event...i don't think it is. I think in the US, people care about the 100, 200, and the Mile...thats about it, am i wrong?

well average running events or not they are the ones who get the spotlight at 99% of the meets anyways. i think thats the point. unless stacy dragila is jumping they dont show nothing/
