Saxer vaults to record height
3/14/2005
Mary Saxer of Lancaster set an American record junior (under-20) mark in the pole vault Sunday, clearing 14 feet, 2 inches in the Nike International Championships in Landover, Md.
Saxer twice broke her national scholastic record of 14-0 set at the Dartmouth Relays in January. After clearing 14-1/2, she went 14-2, the best vault ever in the world by a female 17-under and a USATF 19-under record. Her performance was better than the winning vault (14-11/2) at this year's NCAA Indoor Championships over the weekend.

True facts on Mary Saxer: She jumped the record on a 14' 160lb Pacer Mystic Carbon. She is 5'6" 135. Her jump off take-off is not what it is made out to be from long-jumping. She long jumps off her right leg and vaults off of her left. She gripped the pole at 13'7" and took 8 lefts. Her jump at 14' 1/2 " was actually much more impressive making it by 6-7" clean! She has vaulted for 1 year and 5 months. She is attending Notre Dame and considered North Carolina and Nebraska.
