the one two finish between Walker and Skipper seems quite similar to the 2004 NCAA Indoor Championships, don't you think?

Brad Walker, Men's Pole Vault winner: I came in and did what I wanted to do. I know I put myself in a good position after I cleared 5.65m on my first attempt.

I gained more control during the competition after having a shaky warm-up. Other than that, I felt pretty good with my overall performance today and happy to win my first (U.S.) championship.

Pocatello vaulter takes third in the country
By Brady Slater - Journal Sports Editor

Paul Litchfield

Paul Litchfield overcame illness and a sterile venue to capture third place in the pole vault at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Boston, Sunday.

"It means a lot to me," Litchfield said in a phone interview. "I understand a lot of guys in the U.S. weren't here, because they're competing in Europe, but a USA Championship is still a USA Championship. It was my goal to be in the top three, now I guess I've got to up my standards."

Litchfield, 24, cleared 17 feet, 10 1/2 inches on his third and final attempt to secure third place. He'd started at 17 feet, which he cleared on his second attempt, then eclipsed 17-6 on his first try.

"It was scary," Litchfield said of clearing 17-10 1/2. "My first two jumps were really bad. My technique was all screwed up and my head wasn't in it. My third attempt, I was like, 'Dude, I have to get it done.' I really worked hard to get over the bar, worked the top of the jump really well.

"The third attempt always takes a lot out of you energy-wise, because you're so nervous."

Litchfield failed in three attempts at the next height, 18-2.

Litchfield, who competed for Idaho State and still lives, trains and works in Pocatello, qualified for the USA championships by vaulting 18-4 1/2 on Feb. 4, breaking the Holt Arena record.

To hear him tell it, he'd rather the USA championships were in Holt Arena than the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center at Roxbury Community College.

"The energy in the building was really low," he said. "It was hard to jump well. People weren't really into it. I couldn't believe we were at a USA championship. I felt like there's more energy in Holt Arena with Pocatello spectators."

Litchfield arrived in Boston on Thursday, and fell ill on Friday.

"My glands were swollen, my ears were plugged and my nose was running like crazy," said Litchfield, who carried a box of Kleenex with him to Sunday's competition.

Litchfield returns to Pocatello early this week and will jump at the Intermountain Championships at Holt Arena this weekend. The event is a last-chance meet for athletes trying to qualify for the NCAA's indoor championships.

"I plan on jumping higher at the Intermountain Championships," he said. "I'm going to try and hit a big jump there."

Former Husky Walker Wins U.S. Vault Title

Spokane native, 2004 UW alum Brad Walker closes indoor season as a national champion for third-straight year.

Feb. 28, 2005

BOSTON - Former UW All-American Brad Walker captured his first USA indoor title Sunday, clearing 18 feet, 6 1/2 inches to win the pole vault at the 2005 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Boston's Reggie Lewis Center. With the win, Walker became the second Husky to win a national title in the past seven months, joining 2004 U.S. discus champion Aretha Hill, a 1998 UW grad.

The Spokane native and 2004 Washington graduate needed just one attempt at the winning height, claiming the victory when Oregon sophomore Tommy Skipper -- the only other vaulter remaining in the competition -- missed on all three of his attempts at 18-6 1/2. With the U.S. title in hand, Walker moved the bar to 19-0 1/4, but missed his three attempts.

Walker's win was his first in USA championships competition. The Pac-10 record holder and two-time NCAA indoor champion placed fourth at last year's USA Indoor Championships, and was the sixth-place finisher at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials.

"I gained more control during the competition, after having a shaky warm-up," the newly-crowned American champion said after the event. "Other than that, I felt pretty good with my overall performance today, and happy to win my first (U.S.) championship. I came in and did what I wanted to do."

The victory bookends an outstanding indoor season for Walker, which began with a victory over American record holder Jeff Hartwig, 2000 Olympic gold medalist Nick Hysong and 2003 USA indoor champion Toby Stevenson at the prestigious National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev. Walker cleared a personal-best 19-1 1/2 in the Summit win, the third-best mark in the world this year.

My predictions for guys:

Christopher Swanson (Vaulted 17' 6" at Loveland Street Vault from just 7 lefts)

Walker
Buller

Watch out for Chris Smith, he is an amazing vaulter and its a lot of fun to see him vault, his personality on the runway is comparable to Toby Stevenson!!
