Blisters and rips...
This has never happened before, but I have one spot on my hand that keeps developing painful blisters or just ripping. Any suggestions to prevent this from happening??

Yeah, SUCK IT UP! Just kidding, but once you start getting more blisters there, it becomes a callous. Try using New Skin. It burns like hell, but you will have a little layer to keep your raw skin from getting infected.

When you're vaulting, try using athletic tape to tape it up so that it won't come in direct contact with the pole. If it's really bad (ripped and bleeding...I have a few of these myself), then use a band-aid and neosporin underneath the tape. At night, try to always remember to put lotion (if you can find it, bag balm works really well) on your hands..it keeps them a little softer and not quite and rough and dry as they would otherwise be. However, blisters and rips shouldn't stop you from vaulting. This is from an ex-gymnast, so take what you want from it. I usually just put some chalk on it and go.

One more thing if you are worried about the pain interfering with your vaulting...I've found that most of the pain that you get with blisters is due to the pressure...this sounds kind of gross, but what I've figured out that helps is to pop the blister and drain it and leave it that way for a few days. Then, once the new skin underneath has gotten a chance to be exposed to air or whatever, you can rip that skin off (always rip skin in the opposite direction...so if it's attached at the top, rip down) and the skin underneath isn't painful at all when you're vaulting. During this time though, remember to tape the area so that the skin doesn't rip off.

This is the stuff I used to both prevent blisters and Back in the dark ages when I vaulted, I liked it better as a "sticky" than firm grip.http://www.ithacasports.com/tuskbycr.html. Now I can't tell you if it's the same stuff. It's been 35 years afterall. Later...................Mike
